Very sad to hear that Guardian legend John Vidal has died. He was a wonderful writer and reporter on the environment and looked out for me when I joined the paper in the early 90s
@ageofstupid I vividly remember the 1st article of @john_vidal's that blew my mind, when he went undercover as a security guard on the Newbury road protests. It's called "In the forest, in the dark" in this collection and it deffo helped set me on my path 👇

🧵3/3 I was pretty nervous to be interviewed by this giant when I started as CEO @friends_earth in 2015.
But he put me at my ease, we laughed our way through it, and he was very kind in the write up.
Thank you John, for everything, and RIP.

🧵2/3 #JohnVidal's writing always seemed to have the 'local to global' 'global to local' perspective in it.
He would write about big planetary issues and trends but made it real by going beyond the data to put the stories of individuals and communities front and centre.
🧵1/3 So sad to read that #JohnVidal has died
His writing had a HUGE impact on me
As a 1980s Essex teenager, I'd seek out the only copy of the @guardian in my 6th form common room each day & hunt through to find anything by this brilliant journalist

When I first met @john_vidal told him I worked for @PlanningMag and his eyes lit up and he said "Ooh, I'd love to write about #planning!" which I found amazing for someone who flew around the world, covering all the "big" stories. A great journalist and a lovely man, RIP. 2/2
In this new book, environmental reporter John Vidal shows how closely human, animal & plant diseases are intertwined with planetary destruction. He calls for a transformation in our relationship with the natural world, and outlines how to make that change:

The new @Resurgence_mag is a very lovely thing to be spending time with on the journey back to Devon today.
It includes my review of the mighty John Vidal’s last book, Fevered Planet. His death this year is a huge loss, but his words carry on…

The environment, and action on climate change, lost three highly experienced and hugely talented champions in 2023.
In our blog below William Wilson remembers Saleemul Huq, John Vidal & Pete Betts.

John Vidal was a wonderful, smart, funny, canny guy and I was lucky enough to make a few videos with him - a clip of a madcap video from the chaotic Cop 15 climate summit in 2009 in Copenhagen. RIP John. #Legend https://t.co/Bek7afD1Xr
Made studying for finals hard! & JV said their new BS name would never catch on -but a limo turned up whisking them away, owing him £10/a weeks rent he says!
We're deeply saddened by the death of John Vidal, The Guardian's veteran Environment Editor. We worked together on many stories for 30 years, and he was always a staunch ally of Indigenous peoples.

'It's the great green reset: 10 things Britain can do now to save the planet.' - including scrapping the Silvertown Tunnel.
By @john_vidal, may he rest in peace.
Such sad news about the death of John Vidal, former Guardian environment editor. What a brilliant journalist, dedicated environmentalist, and such a warm and interesting human being. Will be hugely missed. Love to his partner and family x https://t.co/QKOktImtd9
