A recent article revisited poet and journalist Jang Jae-sun’s 2024 poetry collection Comfort from the Stars (별들의 위로), bringing us back to a particularly moving piece dedicated to Cha Eunwoo. 🤍

The collection brings together 37 poems for 37 figures from different generations of Korean popular culture. Rather than focusing simply on fame or success, Jang looks at the people behind the stars — the paths they have walked and what they have carried along the way.

His poem for Eunwoo is titled:

“You Who Receive All the Sunlight in the World”
— Singer and Actor Cha Eunwoo

In his accompanying note, Jang recalls seeing Eunwoo seemingly everywhere at the time — on television, in advertisements and in news about his performances. To him, Eunwoo carried the freshness of early summer and seemed to be at a point in his life touched only by sunlight.

But then he saw a different side too.

The poem was partly inspired by a moment when Jang saw Eunwoo speak about the loss of his friend:

“That night, I encountered your tears.
Having lost a friend,
you said you hated looking fine
and hated looking not fine just as much.
As your eyes welled up with tears,
my own eyes grew warm too.”

Later in the poem, that moment leads to a beautiful wish:

“You, who receive all the sunlight in the world,
may you never lose the heart
that remembers those who have lost their light.”

At the end of his note, Jang wishes Eunwoo many more radiant days ahead, while hoping that he will always keep that same heart — one that can look deeply into the shadows of the world.

A beautiful poem, and perhaps an even more beautiful way of seeing the person behind the star. 🤍
