Canadian farmer just lost a contract dispute in court.

--> Owes $82,000 to grain buyer

For failing to deliver 86 metric tons of flax. (~3,100 bu)

The twist?

He responded to a text message picture of the contract with a 👍

Court said the thumbs-up emoji was as good as a signature.

Farmer said the 👍 just meant he received the picture, not that he agreed with the terms of the contract.

Court didn't buy it.

The price of flax went from $17/bu to $41/bu when he was supposed to deliver them.

Agree with the ruling or not, it's a wild example of confirming every verbal agreement in writing.

And now, an emoji can be seen as confirmation.
