The old man on the Old Grand-Dad label has a second bourbon named after him.

His name is Basil Hayden. He was distilling in Kentucky by 1788, and when his grandson launched a bourbon in the 1840s, he named it what he called the man: Grand-dad. On the label, a portrait in a medallion, ringed with a rank: Head of the Bourbon Family.

A century and a half later the same man got a second bourbon, this time under his own name. Basil Hayden's.

Two bottles in the same aisle, one face. Most people never connect them.

The one in the photo left Frankfort in 1972. Distilled in 1967, bottled in bond at 100 proof, and that number is not a house style: for bonded bourbon it is written into an 1897 federal law that has not changed since. This label wears it. "Bottled in bond under supervision of U.S. Govt."

It is in the BAXUS vault now.

Buffalo Trace makes a bourbon named after E.H. Taylor and a bourbon named after George T. Stagg.

Taylor tore the distillery down in 1873 and rebuilt it with column stills and copper fermentation vats he had copied on a European tour. It nearly bankrupted him. In 1879 Gregory and Stagg bought up his debts and forced the sale.

The distillery Taylor lost is the one that puts both their names on bottles today.
