10 NYC property facts that surprised me:
1/ NYC’s 1.17 million tax lots have a combined Department of Finance market value of roughly $1.915 trillion.
2/ Just 2,835 properties are valued above $50 million. That is only 0.24% of all lots, but they represent $451.4 billion, or nearly 24% of the city’s total property value.
3/ Queens has 382,909 tax lots, more than twice Manhattan’s 179,175. Yet Manhattan is worth $656.3 billion compared with Queens at $470.4 billion.
4/ Manhattan contains only about 15% of NYC’s tax lots, but represents roughly 34% of the city’s total property value.
5/ Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens combine for approximately $1.66 trillion, nearly 87% of all assessed property value in NYC.
6/ The largest property segment by number of lots is the $500,000 to $1 million range, with 429,591 properties.
7/ More than 301,000 NYC properties are valued below $500,000, but together they represent only $60.3 billion, about 3% of total citywide value.
8/ LLC-owned properties are worth approximately $503 billion, more than the entire assessed property value of Queens.
9/ Individuals and other non-entity owners still control approximately $960 billion, just over half of all assessed property value.
10/ Commercial and industrial properties lead by value at $597.9 billion, but one- and two-family homes dominate by count with more than 566,000 tax lots.
The biggest takeaway: NYC real estate is incredibly top-heavy. A tiny number of ultra-expensive properties account for an enormous share of the city’s total value.

Apparently Shopify’s CEO thinks governments should remove voting rights for some.
I can’t believe serious people take this man seriously for anything other than how he runs his company.

Idk, feels like it should be front-page news that the CEO of Canada’s largest non-banking company thinks that poor people shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
CEO of Shopify saying he thinks you should get multiple votes in an election if you're wealthy, and NO vote if you don't make at least $100k a year. This man is a threat to democracy.
