GENETIC IMPERIALISM: How GMOs Threaten Africa's Food Security.

Africa faces a critical threat to its food security through what appears to be a form of digital and genetic neo-colonialism. Certain foreign entities, including influential billionaires like Bill Gates through Monsanto’s projects or Gates Foundation programs and other NGOs, are investing heavily in Africa’s agricultural systems, promoting genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and chemical-intensive farming. These efforts, do come as aid, but in disguise prioritise profit and control over local autonomy, fostering dependence on external seeds, fertilisers, and technologies.

As an African, my concerns about GMOs are mostly on their potential risks like: environmental impact, health risks, and the erosion of traditional farming practices in Africa. While some controlled scientific research holds that many GMOs are safe, the long-term effects of widespread adoption in Africa’s diverse ecosystems remain understudied, disturbing and call for concern. Questions like whether it is safe, and why most European countries are banning it, are on the rise.

Another angle of my concern is that the push for proprietary seeds and agrochemicals by multinational corporations is disturbing hence one will be left wondering about who controls the continent’s food systems. How it works? this is exactly why those seeds can't be replanted.

Foreign aid, often tied to these agricultural initiatives, is not always altruistic or a freebie as some of our leaders thought in Africa. I fear that this might serve as a means to integrate African markets into global supply chains, benefiting donors while limiting local self-sufficiency. Historical patterns of exploitation by these foreigners intensify my concerns, as does the lack of robust public discourse on the issue. African leaders, mostly in Nigeria are very quiet about this and their silence is disturbing to me.

African leaders seem to be docile about this issue while their counterparts in Europe are banning it. Russia under Putin banned GMOs, and most European countries have banned GMOs. Currently, Europe is even moving towards total deregulation. African leaders as a matter of urgency must arise and scrutinise these GMO initiatives in Africa.

I believe that interventions, prioritising transparency, local innovation, and sustainable practices will be a game-changer. Without vigilance, the continent risks losing control over its food sovereignty. Greater awareness and independent research are urgently needed and should be encouraged to ensure Africa’s agricultural future serves its people, not external interests.

We all must join our voices to resist Africans from being used as a chemical experiment like a lab rat.

Finally, on returning to Abuja yesterday, I caught up with my dear elder brother and Former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan, to also wish him a happy new year. I also had the opportunity of discussing germane national issues with him.

President Jonathan's patriotic approach to national issues remain admirable. I appreciate his kind advise and guidance and I wish him and his family a happy and productive year ahead.
