When buying antiseptics for your first aid kit or certain situations, make sure you get surgical spirit, not industrial methylated spirit. Surgical spirit is made for applying to small wounds, while methylated spirit is for disinfecting equipment and surfaces.

@Danstro_ The purple one is indeed used in most hospitals. It all goes back to funding. If the hospitals were properly funded we would see both types of spirits. But as we are, they had to choose one which could act as both antiseptic and disinfectant.

@PhilOhSoFar I'm not sure. I usually buy in pharmacies. But you can also identify the spirits by checking the labels. They will indicate whether it's surgical or industrial methylated spirit
And also surgical spirit is usually colourless like water while the other one is dyed purple
