We need to call the Bondi terror attack what it was. Ideologically motivated violence rooted in contemporary antizionism.
The attack was carried out by a father and son acting together. Reporting has indicated recent overseas travel, including time in regions known to be exploited by Islamic extremist networks for radicalization.
Antisemitism has always meant Jew hatred, but its expression has evolved. Classical antisemitism argued that Jews did not belong to the nation because of an allegedly inferior race. Contemporary Jew hatred denies Jews the right to be a nation at all. It rejects Jewish collective existence and treats Jewish self determination as illegitimate.
For months, Jewish institutions, synagogues, schools, and community organizations have been labeled “Zionist propaganda,” “legitimate targets,” or extensions of a foreign enemy. That language is functional. It strips civilians of their civilian status and recasts them as enemy combatants. Once that line is crossed, violence becomes justified.
Antizionism today does not operate as a critique of state policy. It functions as a framework that assigns collective guilt to Jews and treats Jewish presence as provocation. This is how Jew hatred adapts. The vocabulary changes, but the logic does not.
When ideology normalizes intimidation, vandalism, and threats, it creates the conditions in which physical violence follows. Bondi did not emerge in a vacuum. It emerged in an environment where calls to “globalize the intifada” are defended as protected speech, where Jewish fear is dismissed as exaggeration, and where enforcement of existing laws is treated as optional.
Calling this attack antizionist motivated violence is not about silencing debate. If we cannot name the contemporary ideology that animates violence against Jews, we cannot develop tools to prevent its escalation. History has been clear on this point. When hatred is laundered through political language and left unchallenged, it does not remain symbolic for long.
