In July of 1979 Jacksonville Beach officially ended beach driving.
Some weekends Jacksonville’s beaches were covered in cars. While a favorite pastime for many, local authorities felt it was becoming crowded and too dangerous to pedestrians and drivers.

On February 9, 2009 the gateway to the beaches was changed forever. The original B.B. McCormick Bridge was demolished to make way for a larger bridge so the commute to and from the beaches would be easier and the bridge would be higher for boats.

Today in 1997 the demolition of Fletcher High School was underway. The school opened in 1937 with 10 classrooms and 269 students.
In 1964 the school was divided into a Senior and Junior High. As the Junior High population grew it was clear more room was needed.

Today we remember Sid Mickler, the patriarch of Palm Valley, who passed away this week.
He was a community icon during his 94 years. A man who never met a stranger he was always willing to sit and tell a story or listen. He will be missed by the beaches community and beyond.
Thank you to the "Wiley Twins," now Alda Wiley Sheckells and Melba Wiley McCue. They donated photos posing as "Miss Mayport A & B."
We appreciate the donation and the walk down memory lane. We are always looking to add to our collection, you can become part of our history too!
Henry Aaron is more than 44 or even 755, the iconic numbers that come to mind when seeing his name.
On the extraordinary man who began in the Negro Leagues, navigated Jim Crow while playing for Jacksonville and became one of the greatest to ever live.
