Should the government ban data centers? No. Should it subsidize them with your tax dollars? Also no.
Beacon recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of a cryptocurrency mining business after Hawkins County banned all data centers to prevent its business from opening. Regardless of how you feel about data centers, it’s wrong to ask the government to outright ban them. But the government shouldn’t tip the scales in favor of data centers or any type of business, for that matter, either.
Let the market decide, keep the courts open for legitimate property rights claims, and keep government out of the business of picking winners and losers.

Property owners deserve to have a say when large tax hikes are proposed in their community. 🏘️
Since 2020 Beacon has called for Tennessee to institute property tax caps paired with a referendum to protect taxpayers from unexpected increases like this:

Child care just got a little bit easier for families in Nashville!
Data from the Beacon Poll shows child care costs and waitlists are top concerns for Tennessee families. At the same time, the average cost of care now exceeds college tuition.
That's why Nashville's move to eliminate government zoning barriers to opening childcare facilities is a real win. 🎉

🚨 PORK ALERT! 🚨
The Johnson City Commission recently proposed raising its property tax rate by 28-cents, soaking taxpayers with a 20 percent increase. The proposal is not driven by the typical claims of underfunded basic city services like roads, police, and fire departments, but instead by the frivolous need to fund a new aquatic center.

Roughly 250,000 Tennesseans and their employers would have been subject to an unlawful federal overtime mandate, until last week, when the rule was withdrawn by the Dept. of Labor. 👏
We filed a federal lawsuit in 2024 on this issue and are pleased with the DOL's decision. The rule would have required employers to either convert many salaried employees into hourly workers or absorb substantial new payroll costs.
You've likely heard this term recently. But while it is widely used, it's often imprecise.
➡️Some are owned by a single organization, used to run internal systems, others by multiple clients.
➡️Certain data centers power emails and streaming in the cloud and some power AI
➡️While some are hyperscale, others are micro or edge data centers
The purpose of all data centers is to provide reliable computing infrastructure, but their scale, ownership, and energy demands vary dramatically.
🚨 A major regulatory victory for Tennessee! The federal government has officially scrapped the Biden-era overtime rule that would have forced employers, including Christian schools, nonprofits, and small businesses, to drastically change how they pay employees.
"Our client and the Christian schools it represents can now spend those resources to provide an even better education to students."— Wen Fa, VP of Legal Affairs, Beacon Center of Tennessee

Tennessee is one of only four states without any restrictions on property tax increases. Without these common-sense limits, local governments have an outsized influence on the rising cost of living, and it's everyday Tennesseans and the small businesses they build who pay the price.
Over 300 small businesses in Nashville now say property tax hikes are jeopardizing their future.

Nashville is considering handing out tax incentives to Starbucks, Amazon, and Oracle while 300+ small businesses are drowning in a 26% property tax hike.
Beacon Center President Justin Owen said, "This isn't Chicken Little saying the sky is falling. The sky is absolutely falling on these businesses... And when government steps in and takes more and more, they are directly responsible for what happens to those businesses."

While small modular reactor technology offers many benefits, its widespread deployment is still years away.
Policy and regulatory action today is essential to ensure readiness.

"While we welcome Starbucks to the state, attracted by our economic climate, Tennessee taxpayers should not be venture capitalists for Fortune 500 companies. Small businesses and entrepreneurs should not see profits from their daily grind used to financially support a multibillion-dollar corporation."
