Retired as classicist five years ago but today I visited a place which caught my imagination at school, 50 years ago. And its stunning! The ossuary of Brasidas, the Lion, the wild flowers. Its a huge site but I had it to myself, along with my taxi-driver called Sophocles!
The Moon over Dundrum and Newcastle Bays and fluffy cloud-topped Mournes, as seen from the 9.20 pm flight from Belfast International to Mamchester this evening.
Measuring the apparent angular diameter of the Moon and hence its distance, last Sunday evening as part of my OU astronomy course. Came to 353190 km. Not bad estimate for five minutes with a 2 m stick and a 5p piece. Feeling in touch with my inner Eratosthenes!#openuniversity
@ChadWeather My car temp showed 8 degrees as I set out from Marple Bridge at start of squall. It was 3.5 by time I reached Dan Bank, leaving Marple for Stockport, about 4 mins later.

Annual invitation, on his feast day, to read the fun story (translated by me) of how a angry ghost brought about the discovery of the relics of the proto-martyr, Stephen #SaintStephen
Example of just how strong winds are currently. Was tracking son's flight over southern Scotland when I noted an A380 from New York to Dubai doing 725mph, not far short of speed of sound. It had crossed the Atlantic in less than 5 hours.@ChadWeather
@carolemadge In my D.Phil. on Basil of Caesarea, there is a footnote, kindly calculated by Tim Ferris, quondam Demy of Magdalen College, Oxford, proving that in fact one cannot see both the Black Sea snd the Mediterranean from the summit of Argaeus!
