Incredible stuff from @LondonPortAuth. They patrol the foreshore to check people have a permit to look at the mud for old objects (& prosecute you if you don’t have one), but they don’t do any checks for water companies illegally putting sewage in the Thames, and have never brought a prosecution for illegal sewage dumping. We really need to replace them with guardians of the Thames who will actually look after the river.
Reform Latest
2 councillors died before election
Several now suspended for various bits of bigotry
At least 1 doesn’t exist
Others want to stand down cos they didn’t know it’s unpaid
1 thought he would be in Parliament
They don’t need a Whip, they need a Missing Persons Officer
@Feargal_Sharkey The word 'clean' means different things to different people. It could be helpful to explain what 'healthy' looks like and how it is achieved, what living waterways and natural water systems need not just to endure but to live and thrive.
It’s hard to believe that this stunning bluebell woodland is in London, a short walk from a Zone 3 Tube Station. It’s a reminder that our cities could & should be incredible natural Edens, with a bluebell woodland in every borough. Ugly & drab urban areas denuded of nature & beauty are a political choice.
As all of the ‘Green Party is no longer a party of the environment’ nonsense is starting up again, it’s worth noting this battle to save an ancient woodland in Kent. Gallagher Aggregates is proposing to destroy 124 acres of irreplaceable ancient woodland in order to build a quarry. If it goes ahead, this would represent a greater loss of ancient woodland than from HS2 & the Lower Thames Crossing *combined*.
The politics here is interesting, with the campaign to save the wood being led by Stuart Jeffreys, Green leader of Maidstone Borough Council, and with the decision maker being Reform-run Kent County Council. Will Reform actually make good on their constant promises & talk to protect Britains history & natural beauty, or will they sell out Oaken Wood to make a cheap buck?

Big congratulations to Wild Justice for bringing & winning this case. Dartmoor should be bursting with life & large tracts of restored temperate rainforest. Instead- in large part due to over grazing- it is in many places desolate & with less ecological richness than many urban areas.
This case also points to the ancient truth that the so-called ‘tragedy of the commons’ is in fact a tragedy of the *unmanaged* commons and that we need to reform & balance commoners rights with the rights of nature to exist and flourish.
