A "roast" letter from Adolf Hitler to one of his far right political enemies illuminates the headlines today and shows a proven connection between the accusation of "Clericalism" and the NS concept of the Political Church.

In 1926 Hitler wrote a letter to Albrecht von Graefe, a founder of the DFVP or German Völkisch Freedom Party, who had been spreading rumors about him while he was in prison in an attempt to control the far right. In the letter he addressed the rumors that he had "submitted to Rome" and uses the word "Clericals" as a shorthand for political meddling. This helps us complete the connection that Goebbels would use in his propaganda dossier (what we know as a diary). decades later to explain Hitler's position on the Church.

The NS movement had to deal with the political wranglings of the Catholic Church 100 years ago. This informs a modern audience in the difference between Anti-Clerical and Anti-Christian, a line that is easy to blur when this context is missing.

What we see going viral on X today with the Pope interfering with the decisions of American politicians is called "Ultramontanism" and Adolf Hitler, prophetic as always, addressed this head on to save Germany.
