Chicago Flips Red Statement on SB 1560 – Illinois Mental Health Screenings

Chicago Flips Red is deeply concerned about Illinois Republicans’ unanimous vote for SB 1560, mandating annual mental health screenings for students in grades 3–12 without requiring parental consent.

This comes just weeks after families successfully opposed the Homeschool Act, defending parent-child decision-making. Yet now, the state is advancing a law that overrides parents in sensitive decisions about their children’s mental health.

At the federal level, Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller is cosponsoring the Parents Opt-In Protection Act, which ensures parental consent before sensitive screenings. We ask: why were these same protections not demanded here at home?

Parents and families must have a central voice in decisions affecting their children’s health and privacy. SB 1560, as passed, threatens parental authority and opens the door to potential government overreach.

Chicago Flips Red will continue to hold elected officials accountable and advocate for policies that respect families, protect children, and ensure transparency in government programs.
