I do think you’re right when they say “queerbaiting” can do a disservice to the queer coding if we use it as though the creators simply chickened out or manipulated viewers. But censorship doesn’t automatically end the media criticism. We are still entitled to ask who benefits from this ambiguity ? How is it marketed ? And so on

I hear you. I can totally understand that the intention of the production wanting to make it a bl might have been stopped. However, Intent is not the only thing that matters. We’re not sitting here accusing the producers of malicious queer baiting but it’s also important to understand and ask What does the finished product economically and culturally do? Nothing it benefits them economically. The show is genuinely GOOD In fact a straight friend of mine introduced me to it as a bromance but i couldn’t shake off the heavy underlying queer themes underneath it. That’s why it has this bittersweet feeling to it for people who seek out genuine media representation.

I totally get what you mean and certainly I can understand why me saying it is traditional queer baiting would sound like I am also ignoring the social context and where this story is being produced at but ultimately it is profitable for them to not label it as such. Think about it doubles audiences : both fans of Bls who see the heavy underlying subtext and heteronormative ones who won’t see beyond the synopsis of the story calling it a bromance. It’s a valid point but it’s also ultimately hinting at queer representations without giving actual media representation only an outside note from the producer.

Honestly I enjoyed all the books I’ve re-read except The Little Friend by Donna tart. I just wanted to give it a second chance but it bore me to death. Although, It’s really impressive how Tart is able to write the perspective of a very young girl without needing to infantilise our narrator. All while showing the limitations of such narrator. We see the difference between how Harriet understands and reports things and how the adults around her talk about it. It’s the aspect that I really really dwelled on to keep me reading through this book. I know these are the basic technical skills of a good writer but I ve read enough books from the perspective of a young narrator to know that some authors genuinely don’t know what 12 years olds sounds like. I’m sorry Not goo goo gaga 😭 they are not clueless dumb kids

Tiny correction : Harriet isn’t literally the narrator in the strict sense because the novel uses third-person narration she’s, However, the main focal consciousness for major portions of it.

Mmmm call it queer baiting , call it censorship, call it just intense Bromance but honestly even tho we aren’t sure about anything the show is great on its own. take that from someone who’s been into classical music for so many years the soundtrack is phenomenal ! The acting as great doesn’t take me out of the story. It’s been revealed that the show was originally destined to be a bl but they switched it up to a bromance so the romantic tension people see isn’t imaginary at all ! It’s not official a queer kdrama
