Tonight’s #KUCancerFighter hero is Kairo Bush, a 4-month old from Kansas City, battling a Stage II Wilms Tumor. Sweet Kairo was born just after Labor Day and sadly, was diagnosed only six weeks later.
In his first month at home, Kairo’s family started noticing his belly was growing bloated and hard. Doctors initially dismissed it simply as gas, but the family knew something wasn’t right. Two weeks after their initial visit, a mass was located on his left kidney. Poor Kairo had to endure a surgery to remove the kidney, a procedure that revealed the mass was more than a pound in weight. He spent 12 days in the hospital after the surgery and now is in his 10th week of a 27-week chemotherapy regimen.
Despite all he’s been through in his short life, Kairo is incredibly resilient and his family describes him as a very happy baby. His mom says, “You would never know what he’s gone through unless you were told, and he’s a strong little guy with a bright future ahead!” She also reports that Kairo smiles all the time, is learning how to roll over, and enjoys learning new things and meeting new people. Tonight he was scheduled to meet Coach Self after the game, but sadly, has had a rough week of treatment and had to reschedule.
We’re going to get Kairo and his family to Lawrence very soon but in the meantime, we’re proud to dedicate tonight’s call to him and we’re all cheering him on as he hopefully finishes his fight in the months ahead. Rock Chalk, Kairo. You’ve got this! 💙❤️
Today’s #KUCancerFighter hero hits especially close to home, as we spotlight Reggie Mayo, (father of Zeke) a 53-year-old from Lawrence, battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Reggie was just diagnosed in November and already has undergone 2 rounds of chemotherapy. He’s now awaiting a bone marrow transplant but must be in remission before they can move forward. Early tests are looking favorable but Reggie has more chemo in front of him as he continues to prepare for the transplant. He and his wife applaud their medical team at @KUHospital and are thankful for the care they’ve received so far.
Reggie is a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, and dear friend to many. One of his children is former Jayhawk sharpshooter, Zeke Mayo - who he, obviously, lists as his favorite Jayhawk of all-time, though Russell Robinson is also high on his list.
Among Reggie’s favorite basketball moments was watching his son score 21 last fall in leading the Jayhawks to a win over North Carolina.
Reggie was a baller himself back in the day, starring at Lawrence High before going on to play at Dodge City CC for Brad Underwood, and eventually at Tennessee Tech.
Reggie, Jayhawk Nation is behind you 100%. We’re grateful for the tremendous son you raised and while we loved cheering for him, now we’re all pulling for you! You’ve got this, brother. Tonight’s call is for you. ❤️💙

Kansas 6’4 Guard Zeke Mayo is one of the most underrated prospects in the 2025 NBA Draft and is a player who I believe should be a top 40 pick.
In this thread I take a look at his game and explain why.
Kansas transfer Rylan Griffen has committed to Texas A&M, per @joetipton.
After a down year at Kansas, the former Alabama standout gives Bucky Ball a major boost on the wing.
Kansas 6’4 Guard Zeke Mayo is one of the best shooters in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Mayo had a great season for Kansas where he averaged 15/5/3 and shot 42% from three on 6 attempts a game.
Mayo was one of the best off the dribble shooters in the country this season who’s also a high level catch and shoot shooter and is good at creating open looks for himself.
Mayo is also a strong finisher who shot 61% at the rim, and is a good passer who is good at finding his teammates open.
Mayo and Kon Knueppel are also the only players in this years draft who shot 40% or higher from three on 200 attempts, and had an AST% of 15 or higher.
