I am journalist Omar Abd Rabou from Gaza.
A full year has passed since I was abducted by Hamas and subjected to severe and brutal torture. The same ordeal was repeated again a short time later. To this day, I continue to suffer from the physical and psychological consequences of that violence.
I am unable to freely express my personal views because they conflict with the prevailing extremist ideology, placing my safety at risk.
I urgently need evacuation from Gaza to access safety, recovery, and the freedom to speak without fear. My situation is becoming increasingly unbearable, and I appeal to all concerned organizations and individuals to help facilitate my evacuation.
NYC is a city defined by the rhythm of its cultural celebrations— from the Puerto Rican and Pakistani parades to the Dominican Day Parade. Today, the Israel Day Parade takes the streets.
And just like those spaces, the real power is the incredible diversity within it. Walking side by side are families whose roots stretch from Ethiopia, Yemen, Iran, and India, bringing their rich heritage to the center stage.
Mainstream commentary always flattens this reality into a one-dimensional box, leaving audiences with a halved, incomplete script.
But the truth is simple: If you think you know Israel, but you don't know these stories—you don't really know Israel at all.
I think the pigheaded ignorance of the BDS movement is really illuminated best by what they did to SodaStream.
An Israeli company, SodaStream was one of BDS's earliest boycotts, leading to the closure of its West Bank facility in 2015. At the time, the company was the largest private employers of Palestinians in the area, and 600 Palestinians were immediately laid off. Their Palestinian employees received the same benefits, wages, and conditions of Israelis, and all of that was lost due to BDS, who hilariously (and wrongly) claimed that SodaStream was "exploiting" Palestinians.
SodaStream then moved into Israel proper and to a new plant in Lehavim, which is close to Rahat, a large Bedouin town in the Negev. The facility, like the West Bank one, employs the locals: hundreds of Bedouins, particularly Bedouin women, who otherwise lack economic opportunities.
Did this satisfy BDS? Nope. They continue to boycott SodaStream entirely, claiming the factory is part of the Israeli government's plans to ethnically cleanse the Bedouins, which are Israeli citizens of Arab descent. BDS, of course, did not ask the Bedouins, who receive the same wages as Jews, guaranteed by equal rights laws that BDS pretends do not exist in Israel. Those wages are significantly higher than the average income in nearby Arab towns, and SodaStream provides benefits that are rare outside of the urban areas of Israel, like a healthcare plan, pension contributions, and daily transportation. Job satisfaction is very high.
In short, these boycotts just make rich white WASP Westerners feel good. They do nothing for Palestinians or Israeli minorities.
"The stated mission of the boycott is to end apartheid, and I keep saying, what apartheid? My products are made by Israeli-Arabs, not Jewish Israelis."
Seed + Mill, which makes sesame-based foods, is one of the brands that might be impacted by the new boycott of Israeli goods by the Park Slope Food Coop.
The Coop voted this week to boycott all Israeli goods in a contentious vote.
Another example of how these boycotts often end up harming the exact people they were meant to help.
No, I cannot believe I have to write this.
“Second time.” You cannot be voluntarily kidnapped, and definitely not twice.
And being sent away a few hours after doesn’t meet the definition either. Kfir Bibas was kidnapped. Hersh Goldberg-Polin was kidnapped. You bought a ticket. They did not get to come back alive and write an op-ed.
Most Iranians have been cut off from the global internet for 2,000 hours now.
Thank you to my friends at @netblocks for your nonstop coverage of the regime’s attempt to silence Iranians.
Israel’s enemies may have no greater friend than Itamar Ben-Gvir. He is and has always been an extremist who belongs nowhere in the ranks of government, let alone in the Ministry of Internal Security.
Shame on all the enablers who have empowered his extremism.
Netanyahu should fire Ben Gvir.
His actions are reprehensible. Israel deserves better.
The survival of the coalition, and Bibi’s political power, cannot matter more than the dignity of the Jewish state.
Ben Gvir is a national embarrassment. Time and again, he’s behaved recklessly, inflamed tensions, and disgraced the State of Israel. He does not reflect the values of most Israelis. Fire him.
The mosque attack in San Diego makes me sick. No one should ever be afraid for themselves or their children in a house or worship. When any hate crime of this nature is not widely condemned, it sends a signal that there’s tolerance for it. Those cracks will turn into craters.
I don't really care if the security guard was an ignorant anti-Semite or that the leaders of this particular Mosque have a history of embracing extremism. There were kids inside, so I am thankful he acted to stop the shooters.
This targeted attack was an act of terrorism. Something we can't accept in America.
It was wrong when an Islamist extremist targeted a synagogue/school in Michigan a few months ago, and just as wrong today when these two lunatics targeted a Mosque/school.
Parents shouldn't fear that kids going to school or families going to worship might not come home. Such places shouldn't need constant security. The normalization of such evil and hate only ensures further violence.
Everything else is a different discussion.
Horrified by the attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego today.
The pattern of violence against our religious communities is beyond unacceptable — it must never be normalized.
May the memories of the victims be a blessing and let us come together to pray for those affected.
