IMPORTANT UCAT UPDATE 22/6/20.

Erasable whiteboards will be allowed both at home & in the testing centre.

This is huge news and alleviates any worries about the online scratchpad (which can still be used).

INTERVIEW TIP:

Take a bottle of water to the interview. You can take a sip if you feel under pressure or if you need a few extra seconds to think about an answer. This is useful in both panel & MMI interviews. Sometimes they will give you water on the table - sip it!

Verbal Reasoning: True/False/Can’t Tell questions are much quicker to answer - focus on getting through these quickly to save you time!

UCAT TIP:

Quantitative Reasoning: always look at the UNITS on the axes of graphs - they will be there for a reason.

Your final answer often requires a conversion based on the units given.

Spend the first 15s of every question UNDERSTANDING the data!

UCAT TIP:

Verbal Reasoning, either:
1) read the passage and then answer the question, or
2) read the question and then skim read the passage for the answer.

Technique 2 is faster but has high risk, especially for type 2 VR questions!

UNIVERSITY TIP:

Play the odds: there’s no point putting two universities with the same grade requirements as your firm and second choices - you will either get into both or none!

Think about this when making your university choices.

Don’t choose your university based on the “prestige” alone. Do they offer what you want? Do they have the extra-curricular you need? Do they teach in a style you will learn from? Is the application process suited to your strengths?

Interview Tip:

Avoid filler words and sounds such as “erm” or “like” - they don’t sound professional or confident. To overcome this, record yourself speaking, try talk slower, prepare & practice your answers.

Medical Interview Tip:

If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t bluff - tell them “I’m not 100% sure about that answer, but I would guess... because.”.

Be smart and calculated.

Interviewers can tell when you're making things up.

PS Tip:

Make sure your PS doesn't fall into this common trap.

Don't open your PS with a quote. Many statements do this but this does not help convey WHY YOU want to do medicine.

Try to be genuine and follow our suggested structure!

Don’t just list your work experience or achievements - what did you learn from them, what did it make you realise & why does it make you a good candidate for medicine?

UCAT TIP:

In 2020 no test takers will be allowed to use a whiteboard and pen. All candidates will have access to a scratch pad (similar to notepad) that is ONLINE. This is likely to have big consequences in your method for answering some questions!
