The federal government on Wednesday increased the price of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs3.40 and Rs6.72 per litre, respectively, for September 10.

According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the price of petrol was fixed at Rs367.75 per litre, while HSD would cost Rs392.67 per litre for Thursday.

The latest revision comes a day after the government hiked the price of petrol and HSD by Rs5.58 and Rs4.18 per litre, respectively, for September 9.

Sindh Assembly Rejects Proposal to Divide Province

The Sindh Assembly Secretariat has sent letters to the principal secretaries of the President and Prime Minister, as well as to the Senate and National Assembly, conveying a resolution rejecting any proposal to divide Sindh.

The resolution called on the federal government, Parliament, political parties and state institutions to respect the “democratic will of the people of Sindh” and refrain from supporting or considering any proposal that would alter the province’s territorial integrity.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia & Türkiye Defense Pact Faces First Major Test

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif says the three-nation defense agreement will become operational if Saudi Arabia faces aggression, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the Kingdom’s security.

The statement comes after Houthi drone and missile attacks targeted Saudi civilian and energy facilities, injuring 73 people, including women and children. The attacks struck areas including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, with fires and disruptions reported at energy facilities.

The latest escalation has raised concerns over regional security and the protection of critical energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has vowed to take necessary measures to defend its sovereignty.

Islamabad Bans All Sheesha Cafes

Islamabad authorities have imposed a complete ban on sheesha cafes, including those operating with official NOCs, until further notice.

Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has warned the government to accept the party’s demands and withdraw the petroleum levy by September 10.

Sindh Advocate General Denies Government Interference in Mir Raza Case

Sindh Advocate General Javed Dero has denied any personal or government interference in the Mir Raza case, saying that the commission may have misunderstood the situation.

Speaking to the media outside the court after proceedings of the commission investigating the Mir Raza case, Javed Dero said he disagreed with the judge’s remarks regarding the matter.

He said, “The commission may have misunderstood the issue. There is no interference from the government. I have already apologized, but they are still upset.”

The Advocate General maintained that neither he personally nor the Sindh government had any involvement in influencing the proceedings. He said the government’s only concern was that justice should be served.

Javed Dero further stated that the Sindh government stands with the family of Mir Raza and shares their concerns and sympathies. He reiterated that there was no intention on the part of the government to interfere in the case or affect the course of justice.

Senate Committee Approves Major Criminal Law Reforms

Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee on Interior has approved a series of important criminal law amendments, including a proposed death penalty for acid attacks.

🔹 Acid attacks: Proposed punishment includes death, life imprisonment, or at least 14 years’ imprisonment, along with a Rs2 million fine.

🔹 Domestic worker abuse: Physical violence, sexual harassment, forced labour, wage theft and other forms of abuse could carry up to 10 years in prison and Rs100,000 fine. Abuse resulting in serious injury or death could lead to life imprisonment.

🔹 LPG safety: Tougher penalties are proposed for unauthorised LPG decanting, with fines reaching Rs500,000.

🔹 Dead bodies: Hospitals withholding bodies over unpaid bills could face imprisonment of up to 3 years and a Rs1 million fine, with exceptions for autopsies and police investigations.

🔹 Rape laws: The committee also approved amendments aimed at strengthening the anti-rape legal framework.

🔹 Consumer protection: Private healthcare providers in Islamabad would be brought under consumer protection rules, including requirements for itemised bills and displayed fee schedules.

The committee also discussed concerns over official passports issued to former parliamentarians and the regulation of social media access for minors.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has strongly reacted to statements by federal ministers regarding the creation of new provinces and administrative units, saying that national decisions should be made by genuine representatives elected by the people not by those who are a “product of Form 47.”

Addressing the Sindh Assembly, Sharjeel Memon termed statements against the 18th Amendment and provincial autonomy deeply regrettable. Addressing Federal Ministers Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Asif and Mustafa Kamal, he said that if they have reservations about the 18th Amendment or provincial powers, they should come to Parliament and present their position instead of making statements through the media.

Sharjeel Memon said that those who were not elected through the people’s vote have no right to decide the future of the nation.

He said the 18th Amendment granted greater autonomy to the provinces, enabling Sindh to make significant progress in sectors including health, education, energy and infrastructure. The establishment of modern healthcare facilities and universities in cities such as Sukkur, he added, is among the benefits of provincial autonomy.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh has also rejected statements regarding the creation of new provinces, describing them as interference in Sindh’s constitutional status. The party made it clear that there would be no compromise on the unity of Sindh, the 18th Amendment, provincial autonomy, or constitutional rights.

A high-level committee has proposed a 27-member elected Islamabad Capital Territory Assembly, with its own Chief Executive and 27 administrative departments.

The proposal would give Islamabad greater administrative and financial autonomy, with elected representatives overseeing areas including health, education, environment and municipal services. Law and order and master planning would remain under the federal government.

The proposed Islamabad Capital Territory Government Act 2026 would require approval by the federal cabinet and Parliament before becoming law.
