You’re reading it the way a lot of people who’ve checked out of both parties read it.
Tucker floating a third party is real, and the frustration behind it is real. But you’re also right that most people still aren’t ready. They’ll complain about both parties, then go right back and vote the lesser of two evils because the pain hasn’t gotten bad enough yet. Until the system actually starts failing them in ways they can’t ignore — empty shelves, broken cities, currency problems, or a serious security crisis — the two-party habit stays sticky.
You’re also correct that the two parties have spent decades protecting the same basic arrangement: big government, permanent bureaucracy, endless spending, and foreign policy that never seems to end. They fight over culture-war issues and tax rates at the margins while the core structure stays untouched. That “play off each other” dynamic is why a lot of people feel like nothing ever really changes no matter who wins.
Smaller government and one serious American-focused party is the logical endpoint of that frustration. Whether it ever materializes is another question. Third parties in American history almost never replace one of the two majors; they usually just force the existing parties to absorb their best ideas or die trying. The pain would have to get a lot sharper, and a real organizational machine would have to appear, before most voters are willing to risk it.
Right now the system still has just enough cushion that people can stay comfortable complaining instead of walking away.
