I no longer donate anything to “charity”.

I have come to the conclusion that most charities and family foundations are complete scams. They aren’t funding some noble cause. Their purpose is to provide salaries and pay the expenses of the executives or family members or other connected individuals.

The charity wrapper is primarily a tax avoidance strategy. Trillions of $$$ are parked in these tax free entities, invested and growing and supporting designated beneficiaries with jobs, travel and expenses.

In the 1970s, the golden lion tamarin was down to fewer than 200 individuals. The entire wild population of this small primate lived in scattered fragments of Brazil's Atlantic Forest, one of the most heavily deforested places on Earth. It was headed toward probable extinction.

What followed was one of the most intensive and sustained conservation interventions ever attempted for a single species.

The Smithsonian Institution and Brazilian partners launched a captive breeding program in 1983. Over the following decades, roughly 150 zoos worldwide participated, building a captive population that eventually numbered around 500 tamarins. Starting in 1984, zoo-born tamarins were reintroduced into protected forest fragments.

Simultaneously, the Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado began buying and reforesting private land to reconnect isolated habitat patches, planting over 800,000 native trees to create forest corridors that allowed separate populations to interbreed.

The 2022-23 census estimated the wild population at approximately 4,800 individuals, a 31% increase from the previous count and a full or partial recovery of every population that had been hit by yellow fever. The species was downlisted from Critically Endangered to Endangered in 2003 and has remained there ever since.

The tamarins still need more connected forest, genetic exchange between fragmented populations, and ongoing management in order to make it. But going from 200 animals to 4,800 over 50 years, surviving a yellow fever outbreak in the middle of it, is one of the best signs that intensive human intervention can work.
