Seeing this 52-minute documentary leaves little doubt that @DeutscheWelle has done such a crude, intellectually dishonest, hatchet job of raising alarm about Pakistan’s nuclear program by questioning its legitimacy & safety, recycling old propaganda to link it to religious extremism! For example, the documentary starts off with the laughable proposition that Pakistan ‘illegally developed’ The Bomb, as if there’s a legal path to acquiring nuclear weapons, which Germany’s friends like India & Israel may have pursued! Then this documentary goes on to say the Pakistan Government ‘officially revealed’ the Bomb via the nuclear tests in 1998, WITHOUT MENTIONING that Pakistan’s tests were in response to the nuclear tests of India, also the architect of nuclearisation of South Asia, a fact that Deutsche Welle conveniently overlooks in its quest to demonise Pakistan! Given these low standards of professionalism of Germany’s ‘state-funded international broadcasting network’, it is perhaps no accident that Germany’s own international standing has fallen, since Germany suffered a humiliating defeat in elections to the UN Security Council in June 2026, losing to Austria & Portugal. Ironically, this defeat at the UN coincided with the first anniversary of German Chancellor Merzl’s shocking acclaim of Israeli aggression against Iran in June 2025, when he said ‘Israel is doing our dirty work’ & ‘rules of international law do not apply to Iran’!

One of the major differences between South Asia and East Asia is the former doesn’t have a deep tradition of meritocracy. Consequently, South Asian societies fail to build high quality states. The lesson being that without good bureaucracy and a strong public service ethos you simply end up with bad governance regardless of whether that misrule operates within a democratic or autocratic political system.

Thank you for your polite and respectful reply. I try not to engage with Twitter replies, but you wrote a long, well argued and I believe heartfelt comment, and I believe I owe a response.

You start with saying that “[w]hen Imran Khan came to power, Pakistan was drowning in debt, corruption, and hopelessness.” However, when Imran Khan left Pakistan was drowning in even more “debt, corruption and hopelessness”. Several federal ministers and much of Punjab government were knee deep in corruption and even Begum Sahiba herself was involved in such matters. Unfortunately most top Pakistani political leaders have exchanged undue favours with Malik Riaz and others and Imran Khan continued that sorry trend.

You then say “[m]any PTI supporters believe General Bajwa broke trust with Imran Khan and that powerful interests worked behind the scenes to remove him”. But you don’t say how the powerful interests also worked openly to promote Imran Khan for years and bring him to power. Why are the generals only “democratic” when they bring you to power and become puppets of “powerful interests” when they remove you?

You rightly praise Ehsas programme, Panagahs, and a focus on the poor. Full marks there. Sehat card, although it wasn’t properly funded, was also a great initiative as was the Roshan Digital scheme. The government’s handling during COVID was also immaculate.

But in our affection for a leader, we cannot just ignore or deny inconvenient facts. Imran Khan considered all his political adversaries as enemies of the country and was more than happy to jail innocent people. He kept Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, possibly the most honourable leader in Pakistani politics today, in the same jail cell where he is languishing today.

That said, Imran Khan is today the most popular leader and if and when he gets another chance of governing, I hope he adopts a more democratic behaviour and selects a team with greater competence and financial integrity.

Nothing I say above absolves the corruption we see today in the federation and the provinces or the fact that most of our governments are not legitimate in the eyes of the people.

History will not judge us or the last two decades kindly. But I hope events like May 9 and February 8 are not repeated in our history. With multiple crises brewing in KP, Balochistan and AJK, I hope the country’s leaders find the sagacity and courage to reach some understanding and let the country move forward. Pakistan Zindabad.

Her husband died young. His family refused to fund her children's education. She pawned her own jewellery to send her sons to school. Then to Aligarh. Then Muhammad Ali to Oxford.

The boy she scraped and saved for became Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar. Co-founder of the All India Muslim League. Leader of the Khilafat Movement. One of the greatest Muslim voices of his generation.

His brother Maulana Shaukat Ali stood with him. Together the Ali Brothers shook the British Empire.

And Bi Amma stood behind both of them.

In 1917 both sons were imprisoned by the British.

She went on stage in a burqa.

The first Muslim woman ever recorded to address a political gathering in India.

She toured the country. Raised funds. Organised women. Presided over conferences. Her words became a song that echoed across every household in India.
