Wenda, interim president of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), said Pacific leaders must take stronger action as he accused the Indonesian security forces of intensifying violence against West Papuans.
“On behalf of the ULMWP and West Papuan people, I demand that Indonesia’s Associate Membership of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and Dialogue Partner status in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) are immediately revoked,” he said in a statement.
Wenda alleged recent incidents in Timika and Intan Jaya included explosives being placed on the bodies of West Papuans killed by Indonesian forces.

Semoga Mama Yasinta sehat selalu.

Nakias, May 23, 2026. The Kamuyen clan blocked a 135-kilometer stretch of road that the Kamuyen clan had originally blocked, but the company continued to dismantle the road. The company used Indonesian Army military personnel to force the community to remove the roadblock, but the indigenous community continued to block it. Merauke Regent's Decree No. 100.3.3.2/1105/2025 concerning this 135-kilometer stretch of road is currently under challenge, but the road remains open.
South Papua is currently facing a large-scale deforestation project driven by the Indonesian military through palm oil plantations, food estate projects, rice fields, and sugarcane plantation programs.
Across many villages, the Indonesian military and security forces are heavily deployed to protect these projects. The situation on the ground feels like a military operation in the middle of a war zone.
The indigenous peoples of South Papua, especially the Marind, Muyu, and neighbouring tribes and clans, are facing discrimination, intimidation, harassment, and pressure from Indonesian military and security forces.
Evidence of these impacts can be seen in the documentary “Pesta Babi,” which is now available on YouTube.

Tensions have resurfaced in South Papua after indigenous communities from Marga Kamuyen carried out a blockade against the 135-kilometre road construction project in the Nakias area, Merauke. Community members expressed disappointment because the project continues despite previous blockades and while the Merauke Regent’s decree regarding the feasibility of the road construction is still being challenged at the Jayapura State Administrative Court.
The situation intensified further following reports that Indonesian Army (TNI AD) personnel were deployed to the area and requested that the indigenous community reopen the blocked road.
**Lament of the Papuan Cassowary**
In the green and mighty land of Papua, You walk proudly, majestic cassowary. A blue crown blazes on your head, Strong feet tread the wet and lush tropical forest.
The Wor Mon wind dances in your black feathers, Figs and palms fall, bringing sustenance. Your children run beneath the dense canopy, Your home is the jungle, a sacred ancestral heritage.
But then come the Indonesians with machines and lust, Chasaws roar, bulldozers tear the earth. The forest is cut down for palm oil, mining, and new roads, Your nest is destroyed, the land of Papua cries red with blood.
Cassowary... oh Papuan cassowary, Your deep voice is now a mournful scream. There is no longer shelter from the scorching sun, There is no longer a green path to escape and survive.
The humans from the west who came bringing promises of development, Why have you torn the lungs of this island?
When the forests are gone and the rivers are murky,
Who will cry for us all?
Let the cassowary remain the king of the Papuan jungle,
Let its crown flutter in the mountain breeze.
Don't rob its home for a moment's money,
Because without the forest, we will all lose our breath.
Papuan cassowary, a symbol of freedom threatened with extinction along with its owner,
May one day the forest be green again, And you can run free in your own land.
