Hydrogeology in the Afar: Water Resources, Pollution and Groundwater Resources by @BehailBirhan
The workshop took place at Ambassador Hotel in the Bole District of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 28-31 August 2023
Water quality changes bn source & point of use in urban piped water systems =f(pipewater residence time (RT),source water compositional stability, & -ve pressure in networks). 222Rn is shown to be a promissing new tool to estimate pipe water RT. &more⬇️

Groundwater plays a key role towards #climateresilience - but it needs to be understood, protected & managed.
Read insights from REACH's exciting GW research in Kenya & Ethiopia in this piece by @florencetanui@BehailBirhan, Prof Dan Olago & @Sefwater.

A highlight from @BehailBirhan yesterday: forthcoming @reachwater work uses stable isotopes to identify abstraction source of tapwater. In the graphic top left, strongest red shows highest concentration of water abstracted from groundwater sources; green, surface water
For me - I wonder if, when new surface water supplies come online (in short-term, Sibilu + Gerbi), is it possible to route new transmission lines into these areas first, to directly supersede groundwater dependence for high-use households?
.@BehailBirhan emphasised the need to transition towards a role for groundwater sources as backfill in times of shortage - 'conjunctive use' with surface water so that both are managed sustainably
Glad to present a policy brief by #REACH/#WLRC on AA city water supply challenges @ #AAAN Workshop. We had fruitful discussion with diverse representations #AAWSA, #IWMI, #MoWE, #AAU, #AACRA ,#UNHabitat, #ACEWM. Important feedback noted to improve the draft policy brief.

Over the next few months, we'll be sharing our REACH Stories of Change where you will find key findings from our @FCDOResearch funded work and how it is delivering #impact, changing policy & practice and improving people's lives.
First one out tomorrow!
Marking the end of the international year of (gw) groundwater (2022) with Hydrogeologists in Ethiopia. They came together to revitalize their association & form a local IAH chapter. The gw year ends today. GW will continue to serve Ethiopia's endever to meet SDGs.
The deadline to submit your abstracts to this fantastic session at the @theAGU fall meeting is still open. If your work centres around 'water, health and climate', this is the place to submit your work!
Submission deadline: 3 Aug

Meet @Sefwater 👋
He sees groundwater as a hidden treasure. "wisely used it can support Africa's rural economic transformation. Hydrogeology knowledge is the key to unlock this treasure"
He works tirelessly to advocate for good #groundwater governance in sub-saharan Africa
@siwi_water@Sefwater I am one of the luckiest who got the chance to work with Prof. Seifu. I never forget the moments when his passion pours talking about the hidden treasure. He is my mentor, boss and role model. As Ethiopian Early Career Hydrogeologist, it makes me proud to be supervised by him.
