North Korea has advised its citizens to consume dog meat soup, locally known as boshintang, as part of its recommendations to cope with an ongoing extreme heatwave. State-run media described the traditional dish as a food believed to boost stamina and help the body recover during periods of intense summer heat.

The recommendation comes as the country experiences unusually high temperatures, prompting authorities to issue guidance on staying safe in the heat.

While dog meat remains part of some traditional practices in North Korea, its consumption has sharply declined in neighbouring South Korea, where a ban on the dog meat trade is being phased in. The advisory has also drawn international attention because of the cultural and ethical debates surrounding the practice.
