Every year, the Union Budget creates excitement
₹X crore for semiconductors, ₹Y crore for AI, ₹Z crore for future tech.

But the uncomfortable ground reality is this:
we are still largely seen as a consumer market, not a technology originator.

Historically, technology reaches us after manufacturing nations have already developed two advanced generations of it. That hasn’t changed much.

This isn’t a pessimistic post..it’s about priorities.

The real concern is the disproportionately low investment in core research, the mother of all innovation.
When you compare India’s R&D spending as a % of GDP over the last 5 years with countries like China and the USA, the contrast is stark.

A simple truth policymakers must confront:
you cannot expect breakthrough research on a ₹35k monthly stipend.

Patriotism is important but it doesn’t pay rent, fund experiments, or retain talent.

Without meaningful investment in research, higher per-capita GDP, and better incentives for young researchers, we risk missing yet another development wave first manufacturing, now semiconductors and AI.

Ambition needs backing. Budgets should reflect that.

Every Budget we celebrate big allocations for AI & semiconductors.
But the ground reality remains uncomfortable:

• 🇮🇳 India: ~0.65% of GDP spent on R&D
• 🇨🇳 China: ~2.5%
• 🇺🇸 USA: ~3.4%

That’s why innovation reaches us 2–3 generations late.
Patriotism is important.. but it doesn’t pay rent or fund labs.
You can’t expect breakthrough research on ₹35k stipends.

At what point do we stop celebrating adoption and start demanding invention?
