Anton Chekhov (1860 - 1904) was a renowned Russian playwright and short story writer who is widely recognized as one of the greatest literary figures in history. Although he trained and worked as a physician, his enduring legacy lies in his groundbreaking contributions to literature and early modernist theatre. His difficult childhood, marked by poverty and a tyrannical father, heavily influenced the psychological complexity of his later characters. He fundamentally transformed dramatic arts and the short story by focusing on realistic human interactions, subtle moods, and submerged life rather than conventional plot-driven action. Major plays like The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard remain central to the theatrical repertoire due to their unmatched portrayal of the human condition. Despite battling tuberculosis for much of his adult life, he maintained a prolific writing career while also engaging in extensive philanthropic efforts. He passed away at just forty-four, leaving behind a monumental body of work that continues to shape modern acting and storytelling.
