@TimSweeneyEpic@tweekyx@InputStarling@OFFTHEXio@kev_marciano Is Fortnite on Steam in any consideration? Would it make sense to have some setup where V-bucks are slightly more expensive on Steam to make up for the cut, but V-bucks bought cheaper elsewhere can be redeemed in-game?
@BlurBusters The BFI UFO test seems to look quite good on the 90 Hz Steam Deck OLED display. I think the CRT Beam simulator might be a bit too much for that display though since a bit of flickering is still noticeable. Can definitely see why 120hz+ is recommended.
@SadlyItsBradley@mux213 I'm hoping Frame has some type of Source 2 engine support with social integration. Basically like VRchat / Garry's Mod where you can use avatars and meetup, but you can make private spaces to build stuff or even invite others to build stuff with you.
@icepowerofc@TimSweeneyEpic I almost wonder though if such a game would need a special deal with a higher revenue. Fortnite would bring its own giant online infrastructure. Maybe Steam needs some sort of "handshake" system where such a game can rely on its own systems, but fallback on Steam's when needed.
@soft_fox_lad Discoverability is an area where Steam is quite far ahead, so you could say it offsets some shortcomings a bit. I'm a Steam fan myself, but nothing is perfect. Deep dives like this are always worthwhile to assess the current situation and explore how things could be made better.
@soft_fox_lad That's a great writeup that really pulls a lot of things together with all the quotes. I think the issue of revenue cuts or sale prices has been replaced in recent years by visibility. If your game is buried under 1000s of others, you're doomed regardless of asking price.
@BlurBusters Earlier in the year, there was mention of some work being done related to SteamOS. Is that related at all to the black frame insertion test on the Gamescope GitHub? I'm just wondering if that might mean anything for current / future hardware in terms of features.
@_rygo6 I always thought passthrough video was some sort of compromise compared to overlaying on a see-through display; I didn't realize it was actually the solution to a lighting issue I never knew existed. It makes a lot more sense now.
@SadlyItsBradley Face and eye tracking could make it awesome for VRchat. Maybe at minimum they could do something like Quest 3's upper body tracking as well? FBT seems like it would be a big ask.
@wolfofthorns@luna_yeen Since it automatically cycles after use, it maintains itself quite well for a long time; just have to pour in some litter and change waste bags every few days. Taking it apart is pretty easy, but cleaning anything beyond a basic litter tray is usually a bit of a pain anyway.
@luna_yeen@wolfofthorns If it's an option, a litter robot 4 is a god-tier upgrade with multiple cats. Just one handles our 3 cats (although they needed time to get used to it).
@TimSweeneyEpic Now that Fortnite is returning to mobile (via EGS), is a Linux version under any consideration as well? Basically a version that could run on Steam Deck.
@TimSweeneyEpic With Google / Apple getting opened up more, do you think PC spaces need to open up any more? Anyone can do a launcher, but should big existing ones offer ways for devs to take back more of the cut? Like lowering a 30% cut if devs opt to handle background costs?
@FrostKittyPaw Just being yourself should be enough for them. It's not their life to live and what makes you happy should make them happy that you are. I don't know the specifics in mind, but I think in general you should focus more on what makes you happy than what makes others unhappy.
@FluffySparkle1@SadlyItsBradley I hope there are more options in the future for wireless HMDs that lean almost entirely on streaming from a nearby PC / box. A separate box for rendering means more power and less weight in the HMD, making it more comfortable to work with.
@Plagman2 Lossless Scaling on Steam seems to be doing some sort of software magic for frame generation that even makes 30 > 60 FPS feel good. Is that a type of software feature Valve would look at adding into SteamOS for the Deck?
