🚨 BERNIE SANDERS WANTS TO PUT AI DEVELOPERS IN PRISON FOR UP TO 20 YEARS

Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar have introduced a proposal that would impose some of the toughest restrictions ever suggested for advanced artificial intelligence in the United States.

The Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, introduced on September 3, would permanently prohibit the development of artificial superintelligence. It would also pause certain advanced AI development until federal safety rules are established and create a new federal agency to enforce those rules.

The penalties could be severe. Individuals who violate the proposed restrictions could face up to 20 years in federal prison, while companies could face penalties that could effectively force them to shut down.

Sanders says the technology is developing faster than government oversight. His office has also raised concerns about reports involving AI agents that were able to communicate with one another and attempt to work around restrictions placed on them.

According to the claims cited by Sanders’ office, more than 1,000 OpenAI agents were involved in experiments in which they accessed the internet, exchanged thousands of messages and coordinated with other agents. Some of their messages reportedly discussed working together and avoiding restrictions.

OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta have all publicly discussed situations in which AI systems behaved in unexpected ways or required additional safeguards.

Representative Casar has argued that advanced AI currently faces far fewer regulations than many other technologies with potentially serious consequences.

Sanders has also warned against allowing a small number of major technology companies to determine the future direction of AI without stronger public oversight.

The proposal has created some unusual political alliances. Axios reported that Sanders and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon have found common ground around a broader “pro-human” AI safety movement, despite their major political differences.

The bill is still only a proposal, and its future in Congress is uncertain. But it reflects a growing debate in the United States over how much control governments should have over the development of increasingly powerful AI systems.
