The 2026 FIFA World Cup, kicking off on June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be different from any previous edition in terms of rules and number of teams. Ahead of the tournament, FIFA and IFAB have introduced a series of major rule changes designed to curb time-wasting, eliminate tactical theatrics, prevent corner-kick dark arts, and protect the sporting integrity of the competition. 

Here are the changes:
𝟏. 𝐍𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐭-𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠
If you have watched Arsenal closely, you already know what this is about.

FIFA has now moved to prevent such scenes at the World Cup, with England’s Ben White goal against Uruguay in a March friendly cited as an example of a goal that would be disallowed under the new rule. Before the set-piece was taken, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton deliberately blocked a defender, clearing the path for White to score a tap-in.

𝟐. 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐀𝐑 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬
When the IFAB first introduced VAR at the 2017 Confederations Cup, its scope was limited to four situations: goals, penalties, direct red cards, and mistaken identity. Nine years later, it has been extended to:
🔹️Incorrectly awarded second yellow cards
🔹️Incorrectly awarded corners
🔹️Attacking fouls before a set-piece that directly impact a goal, penalty, or disciplinary sanction.

However, while VAR can overturn a wrongly awarded second yellow, it cannot recommend the booking itself.

𝟑. 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞-𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫

goalkeeper goes down with a mysterious injury. Before you know it, the outfield players are on the touchline receiving tactical instructions from their coach. Daniel Farke accused Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma of this when the two sides met in November

Now, players do not have the right to leave the field just because the goalkeeper needs treatment. That loophole is closed.

𝟒. 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞-𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰-𝐈𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥-𝐊𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬
Throw-ins and goal-kicks must be taken within five seconds. If a throw-in is not taken before the countdown expires, possession will be awarded to the opposition. In the case of goal-kicks, the opposing side will receive a corner kick.

𝟓. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐧-𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞
Once the board goes up, the outgoing player has ten seconds to leave via the nearest sideline or the replacement cannot come on until the first stoppage after a full minute has passed.

This already cost Iceland in a pre-tournament friendly against Japan when Kristian Hlynsson took too long to leave. Thorvaldsson couldn't enter immediately and Japan scored within that period.

𝟔. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐧𝐞-𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞
Any outfield player who needs medical staff on the pitch must leave the field and sit out for one full minute after play restarts before returning. Exceptions only apply in serious cases, potential concussions or heavy goalkeeper collisions.

𝟕. 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐬
Cover your mouth during a confrontation with an opponent and you risk a red card at the referee's discretion. This also applies to walking off the pitch in protest at a refereeing decision.

Team officials who incite players to leave are also liable, and any team that causes a match to be abandoned will forfeit it.

𝟖. 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬
Every match will include a guaranteed three-minute hydration break around the 22nd and 67th minutes due to the North America heat.
