Hideo Kojima has revealed new info on what happened with the cancellation of “PHYSINT” in an interview with Gene Park on the Washington Post:
- Sony told Kojima they are cancelling the game via a Zoom call, not in-person
- Hideo Kojima says Sony gave him no reason for the cancellation. He described being shocked rather than angry
- Kojima is still extremely confused by the cancellation as Physint is the biggest selling game he could possibly make
- Physint is still very early in development as an engine has not been chosen yet, most of the studio is focused on “OD”
- Kojima spoke to multiple publishers but landed on Xbox due to their established relationship on OD, Xbox said it was “an easy call”
- Kojima says the plot and overall game concept are written, storyboards exist, 3D modeling has begun, and actors are being scanned.
- Sony’s decision reminded Kojima of Konami canceling Silent Hill
- Kojima insists there is no feud with Sony. Despite being shocked and disappointed, he says Kojima Productions still has a strong relationship with PlayStation and that the companies are “not in a dispute” or fighting.
- The entire staff was informed about the Xbox switch one day before the announcement.
- Kojima rejected speculation that the split involved Sony’s move away from physical gaming. He personally prefers owning physical media.
- Kojima expressed concern about the games industry’s increasing aversion to risk. He worries rising development costs are pushing publishers toward proven blockbuster franchises such as GTA VI rather than experimental & risky projects.
- He also sees Kojima Productions’ survival as important symbolically for indie developers as the studio is fully independent
Honestly, it just sounds like PlayStation made an incredibly short-sighted decision to make up for their recent losses and failures on live service games. I don’t think we’ll see Kojima ever work with them again which is really sad as he’s always been the PlayStation guy. I hope Physint and OD end up amazing!
@Pirat_Nation Sony has hundreds of millions to throw at failed live service slop like Concord and Marathon but won't support a visionary like Kojima and his spiritual successor to Metal Gear. Smh
Hideo Kojima has revealed what happened when Sony stopped funding Physint, and the situation was more serious than many expected.
In an interview with IGN, Kojima said Sony called him to a Zoom meeting in June and told him they could no longer fund the project, his mind went blank as he immediately worried about the future of Kojima Productions.
“What am I going to do with my studio?”
“Our studio could end up collapsing because we’ll run out of cash flow.”
Rather than cancel the project, Kojima searched for a new partner, he approached Xbox with a different vision: Physint would not just be a game, but a new IP that could expand into movies, anime, music and other entertainment.
“I’m making this new IP, and I want to consider everything like movies, dramas, anime, TV, comics, music.”
Xbox responded positively, and the partnership developed from there, the team was reduced, with some developers moving to OD, but work on Physint continued.
“The work didn’t stop. I’m still doing the concept.”
Kojima confirmed he does not know whether Physint will still be released on PlayStation, that decision will depend on Xbox,
He said Sony never explained why it withdrew funding, but he has no bad feelings toward the company after decades of working together.
