Terrible news about Sir Roy. He was often a source of advice on how the Commons really works and on my career in and out of the Civil Service. In both cases it would often be in the form of "are you sure that's what you want to do?" Though it was not always framed as a question.

Sir Roy served every PM from Thatcher to Johnson with diligence and skill.

He was the engineer that made the machinery of the Commons run smoothly, efficiently and above all fairly.

The tributes from all sides of the House today are testament to the respect he carried.
