Having the right to do something doesn't make it the right thing to do. When I'm at home, I'm not a County Commissioner. I'm a dad and a husband.
I'm done pretending this is normal. Radical activists are leading us in a race to the bottom and it has to stop. Who’s with me?
Finally some backbone. Better than Voters Not Politicians (@NotPoliticians) and Michigan League of Women Voters (@LWVMichigan) who have been silent. Where have they been?
Hopefully we stop pretending they’re nonpartisan and care about “democracy”
BREAKING NEWS: WHITMER CALLS SPECIAL ELECTION FOR THE 35TH SENATE DISTRICT
April Fools! 270,000 people still don’t have a voice in the state senate because Whitmer is playing politics with the special election.
The truth is waste, fraud, and abuse can’t be found in the budget. I’ve looked for the waste, fraud and abuse line item. It’s not there.
Identifying WFA requires getting really deep into the weeds to ensure your money is spent on effective people and programs. Unfortunately, that oversight process is incredibly slow because we do not have access to real-time data and information about the people and programs in our government.
Lots of chatter about public school enrollment trends as several districts in West Michigan are facing tough decisions over closing or repurposing buildings (both Rockford and Grand Haven school boards voted to close/repurpose elementary school buildings this week.
I dug into the numbers a bit. Grand Haven is down around 1,000 students in the last decade. Rockford is down about 500 in the same period.
Kent County’s population has GROWN by 5% in 10 years. In the same time frame, Kent ISD’s enrollment is down 7%. A -12% gap between population growth and school enrollment.
I think two important things are at play here, and the “culture wars” play a factor in both:
1) Anecdotally, more parents are frustrated with the outcomes from public schools and the steady shift away from reading, writing, and arithmetic in favor of progressive curriculum choices. Parents do have a choice, and many are making the choice to send their children to parochial schools or homeschool them.
2) It’s widely reported that people simply aren’t having families or are having far fewer children than in the past. A LOT goes into this — but the progressive message and shift in culture that devalue parenthood and the family unit play a big role. An unintended consequence for those on the left? Fewer babies and families means fewer students which means less funding for public education. Many on the left are hoist by their own petard here.
It will take serious soul searching to save public education in this country — and we owe it to our kids to do so.
@TaylorRMarshall It’s a little odd that you picked those two items because the bookstore absolutely carries religious gifts. I’ve bought many there over the years, as recent as last fall.
