@maxdubler@_giacomo_volpe_ STRs are a red herring here—there are far fewer than people believe—but our city estimates there are 5x more seasonally vacant homes than Airbnb units. We even see places occupied <1mo./year. Should cities like Bend tax this type of use?
We should be making our cities as dense as we possibly can so that we can save our farms and natural land from suburban sprawl. Land conservation legit one of the biggest reasons why I’m a YIMBY.
I learned about the benefits of roundabouts 20 years ago. To this day, convos go like this:
"Roundabouts are a proven way calm traffic, right-size streets, and save tons of lives."
"I don't like roundabouts."
"They save--"
"I don't like roundabouts."
@RHAlexander@cafedujord And rebuild all the mills. And entice workers to move back to hell hole towns. And do it cheaper than the BC sticks. But we could definitely plant the trees.
@Cadessbor@fallingoffaroof@Stressed_P0tato@YIMBYLAND But hey let’s say it could all get spun up and churning like it was 50-60 years ago. Guess what? They still couldn’t do it for less than the stuff, tariffs or not, that comes from BC. So good luck making it spin up AND pencilling.
@Cadessbor@fallingoffaroof@Stressed_P0tato@YIMBYLAND The issue isn’t BF although you can’t just “spin up” harvesting to meet our demand in a week or even a year. The issue is processing. Most of the mills are gone or would take years to get back online. IF you had the workers and they left long ago.
Maybe it’s time for the Finnish model where fines are proportional to your income? Set these up coming off Awbrey Butte and the city will have a windfall.
"Roundabouts are fine in other places, but they confuse drivers here."
The rules of a modern roundabout are:
- yield to someone in a crosswalk
- yield to someone already in the circle
I don't believe the claim that your city's residents are too dumb to navigate a roundabout.
The biggest owners of U.S. apartments and single-family rentals would be rounding errors in any other industry. See chart below.
"Big" is relative. There are no real behemoths in rental housing, which (contrary to narratives) is still dominated by small, local players.
I know the conspiracy theorists will say: "This is misleading! It's higher in markets like Atlanta!" Well, sure, the biggest SFR investor in Atlanta has a whopping 4.5% market share -- still a nothing burger compared to the market leaders in any other industry.
Oregon's federal lands and state parks are venerable, and rightly so.
But many of Oregon's counties also have parks systems, and they aren't all just campgrounds and boat launches.
A quick thread of incredible large county parks in Oregon.
