Last month @Ofcom published a new paper on #deepfakes and what we're doing to address them under the new #onlinesafety regime. A short thread of the main messages 🧵
Platforms regulated under the #OnlineSafetyAct have duties to tackle the sharing of certain types of deepfake. This includes any deepfake that amounts to illegal content (e.g. deepfake fraud ads) or content that is harmful to children (e.g. deepfakes intended to bully a target)
Today @Ofcom publishes two papers on #generativeAI - one looking at the proliferation of #deepfakes and what to do about them. The other looking at the merits of red teaming as a way of stress testing GenAI models. Have a gander (they're pretty good imho). https://t.co/te6EAb7zmt
⚠️ Two in five people have seen at least one deepfake in the last six months.
But only one in ten are confident in their ability to spot them. 🔎
We've set out what tech companies can do to tackle harmful deepfakes, find out more ⬇️

“We recently provided Claude 3.5 Sonnet to the UK’s Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (UK AISI) for pre-deployment safety evaluation. The UK AISI completed tests of 3.5 Sonnet and shared their results with the US AI Safety Institute (US AISI) as part of a MoU”
The deadline for our consultation on protecting people from illegal harms is just 3 weeks away. 📅
Our proposals cover how services in scope of the Online Safety Act should assess & mitigate the risks of illegal content.

Wonderful to speak with @BenedictDel about @Ofcom preparing to become the online safety regulator & conduct algorithmic assessments! Also spoke about the DRCF’s work on AI governance & generative AI and the UK’s AI White Paper - check it out here!
Brilliant reporting from 404 Media on how open source GenAI models are being used to create non-consensual pornography en masse https://t.co/DRbtQCrYg3
I’ve had lots of questions about the AI Safety Summit in November. Today we share more detail on our focus and objectives: it’s a huge opportunity to collaborate with global partners on ensuring we safely reap the benefits of this technology https://t.co/oDmbDWgjZ3
