As someone who just bagged a fully funded scholarship abroad with a 15 yrs study gap, I can tell you school is not scam. Guess what, I traveled almost the whole country attending interviews for 5 years yet no job. Got tired and got into business 10 yrs ago.
Chinedu graduated top of his class.
First-class in Electrical Engineering.
NYSC in Abuja.
He thought his life was finally about to start.
Until he started applying for jobs.
50 applications.
No response.
Then he saw an opening at a major oil company.
He was qualified. He applied.
He didn’t even get shortlisted.
But his classmate—who partied through school—got the job.
His uncle is a senator.
Frustrated, Chinedu started tutoring kids. ₦5k per student.
One day, on his way home, a classmate zoomed past in a Benz.
“Bro, this crypto thing changed my life,” the guy said.
“No one cares about degree again. School na scam.”
That was the first time Chinedu heard it.
But it wasn’t just Chinedu.
It was Halima—the pharmacy graduate selling perfumes.
It was Emeka—the Mass Comm grad driving Bolt.
It was Aisha—the best in her department, now ghostwriting for influencers.
It spread like wildfire.
A generation of Nigerians watched their degrees collect dust, while politicians’ children schooled abroad, came home, and got top jobs—no interview.
That’s when “school na scam” stopped being a joke.
It became a coping mechanism.
But here’s the truth:
School isn’t the scam.
A system that crushes talent and rewards connections is.
Education is still the key—but Nigeria lost the lock.
So when they scream “school na scam,”
don’t argue.
Listen.
Because behind every “school na scam” is a broken dream—and a country that didn’t keep its promises.
Tailor your application, have clarity and let it tell the best story about yourself. That's how I recently got a fully funded scholarship worth over #100m in Sweden (SISGP) despite having a 15 years study gap and a 2:1. I wish people takes everything written here seriously.
This is for those who are interested in applying for an MSc, PhD, or Postdoc abroad.
First things first, you need to know that top labs receive multiple applications per week, and it’s not always the smartest or most qualified who get picked. It’s those who prepare smartly
To have an application that stands out, you need to:
📍Be Clear About Your Intentions:
Don’t say you “just like the location” or “want to move abroad.”
▪︎ You must clearly state why you’re interested in their research specifically. Not just their lab, reputation, or country.
Example:
❌️ Bad: “I admire your lab’s reputation.”
✅️ Good: “I’m excited by your work on X, which closely aligns with my research interest in Y. I’d love to contribute by exploring Z.”
📍Do Your Homework:
Before emailing or interviewing, read at least the last 2 years of their published papers.
▪︎ This shows respect for their work and helps you hold an intelligent conversation.
📍Discard the "High-Impact Journal Myth":
Saying “I want to join your lab to publish in Nature or Science” is a red flag
▪︎ Top journals are not automatically from top labs.
It takes intelligence, deep curiosity, and critical thinking.
📍Understand What really matters?
° Asking the right research questions
° Thinking clearly and deeply
° Being truly invested in science, not just the outcome
Top labs want people passionate about a discovery, not just driven by CV goals.
📍Be a Thought Partner:
You’re not just there to execute tasks. You’re expected to think, challenge, propose, and grow.
▪︎ Mentors want to work with people who can teach them something, too.
📍Avoid being a "yes" person:
Critical thinking is Greater Than Blind obedience.
▪︎ Top academics want sparring partners, not robots. If you can contribute creatively, you’re valuable.
📍Know That Hard Work Alone Does. Not Guarantee Success:
You can work 18-hour days and still not make an impact if your idea is flawed from the start.
What matters more:
• Deep thinking
• Strategic planning
• Logical clarity
• Knowing the relevant literature
📍Summary Tips:
☆ Tailor every application
☆ Read their recent research
☆ Be self-critical and curious
☆ Think ahead and ask smart questions
☆ Avoid clout-chasing motivations
