Dignitaries grace King Mzilikazi Commemorations SundayNews September 5, 2026 Raymond Jaravaza at Mhlahlandlela Royal Palace SEVERAL dignitaries have graced the King Mzilikazi Commemorations being held at the Mhlahlandlela Royal Palace, on the outskirts of Bulawayo, on Saturday. Among the VIPs at the royal palace are Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe, Bulawayo Mayor Senator David Coltart, several traditional chiefs that include Chief Dakamela, Chief Matupula, Chief Fuyana are among people from Chiredzi and other parts of the country. The festivities have drawn thousands of people with Amabutho, Amaguqa and Amatshitshi. Cultural dance groups, poets, musicians are entertaining the crowds with captivating performances. Food and drinks are flowing freely as the crowds commemorate the King Mzilikazi, the founder of the Ndebele nation. Today is the celebration of King Mzilikazi since his passing 158 years ago. The celebrations extend far beyond the borders of Zimbabwe. They resonate globally, wherever his descendants and those who identify as Ndebele people have settled. Born near Mkuze in Zululand in 1790, King Mzilikazi, the son of Matshobana, left an indelible mark on history. His passing on September 9, 1868, saw him laid to rest at Mhlahlandlela, Entumbane cave in Matobo, 20 kilometres from Bulawayo. King Mzilikazi’s story is one of defiance against the formidable King Shaka, leading to his northward migration in 1823. Along this arduous journey, he forged a nation, one that defines the modern Ndebele people.
