How Service Sector Should Serve The Production of Wealth
I have known Michael Niyitegeka AKA @niyimic for many years. For some reason our paths seem to keep crossing at various stages in our lives. And if I may add, when it matters most to me. At first, I used to see him at church with his wife Marjorie. They sat at exactly the same place on the same pew, at the back, each Sunday. This was in the early 2000s. As is his nature since I have known him, he is polite in his manner, pleasant in his disposition & generous with himself. I came to learn later that he thrives off moving things.
Then I took on my previous job. One of my immediate tasks was to innovate for the new tech driven media landscape. We turned to the new computing school at Makerere University. Michael was working there on how to get students to innovate for local businesses. Almost 20 years ago, he was already thinking about how to make academia benefit enterprise. He was ahead of his time & before his efforts could actualize, he was driven out by the short term interests of lobbying for grants. He went on to disrupt the tech skills sector. This led him to found Refactory. Which is also why I am writing this.
Before this, we met again for a completely different reason. We have a shared interest in long distance running. We found ourselves as part of a social media running community. Then I did a podcast with him about the Ugandan tech ecosystem. With that we started exploring how it can help farmers. At this point I had pivoted into full time coffee farming. Then we ended up on a tech committee on the Board of a financial institution.
One morning he walked into our scheduled meeting and told me that he was ready to develop a farm integrated management system. He had the skills & the money, what he wanted from me was the opportunity for his students to work for me.
So we had two initial meetings to figure out what I wanted as a farmer. I had always told Michael in earlier conversations that I was not interested in listening to supposedly clever innovations that claim to solve farmer business challenges. Many of them were simply hammers looking for nails. Finally here was a group that was going to innovate based on exactly what I need to drive my coffee farm business. They went one step further. They demanded to come for a field study of the farm before they could commence their development work. It was a most fulfilling 4 hour encounter. We walked all the corners of the farm and I explained every step in the process that could benefit from tech efficiency. They got it. After a heavy lunch & lots of sugarcane, they headed back to their computers at Refactory. For me, I now wait to see how this can become a model for how people in the service sector can directly serve those of us in production. That is how a country builds sustainable wealth that creates opportunities for many. We have to make this work. We must succeed. We will create a new way.
