From the Streets to Purpose: Meet Benjamin

My name is Benjamin, and this is my story. I was once a street child in Kisenyi, Kampala—a place where survival is a daily battle, and dreams often feel out of reach. But even in the hardest moments, I held onto one thing: hope.

Yesterday morning at around 2am, a section of Katwe Kinyoro caught a fire and it burnt down over 25 houses leaving over 100 people with no where to sleep and in great need of basic needs.

I passed by today and it was so not good. The videos show what's on ground as of today.

I'm rallying support to get the basic needs (Clothes, Sugar, soap, beddings, salt, food) to get them off the ground and support through this season.

I'll be visiting again on Saturday with the team and I request that you join us whether in person, in-kind or cash.

Though it has now been four months since we laid to rest my former teacher, Mr. Burora Ibrahim, his memories and lessons still remain alive in our hearts.

He taught me History and Political Education from Senior Three, and he was more than just a teacher in class.

He believed in discipline, respect, and standing for what is right. One phrase he always reminded us of was: “My respect is my right.” Those words still echo in my mind today.

As former students, we continue to remember the guidance, wisdom, and values he shared with us.

As Uganda conducts elections this week, I appeal to fellow youth and our brothers and sisters on the streets to remain calm and peaceful.

Today I pause to commemorate my late grandmother, one of the strongest pillars in my life and journey.
Since 10th Jan 2022, her physical presence has been gone, but her love, sacrifices, values, and lessons continue to guide me every day.
Her legacy lives on in who I am becoming

Yesterday at 1:40am, I was brutally arrested and detained at Biwologoma Police Post until 6:00am, then released on police bond.

Today, the same officers raided where we sleep and arrested three colleagues, including boys aged 9 and 11.

I express my deepest sympathy to the street children who have been brutally arrested and detained this week. I strongly condemn the actions of Kiwologoma Police Post, located near Kampala Flyover, where night arrests of street children have become routine.
