UJ ranked number #1 in South Africa and Africa in 2025 THE Impact Rankings

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has once again affirmed its global leadership in sustainable development, retaining a remarkable position #1 in South Africa and on the African continent.  This is according to the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings released on Wednesday, 18 June 2025. UJ has also achieved its best-ever performance in these rankings, climbing 13 places from its 2024 position of 36th to an outstanding 23rd place globally. The University is now ranked among the top 30 universities in the world out of 2,318 institutions evaluated.

Congratulations to Prof Tankiso Moloi and Dr Varaidzo Denhere on their upcoming book Driving Change: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in sub-Saharan Africa.

ESG considerations have become central to discussions on corporate responsibility and sustainable investment. However, much of the existing discourse, research, and policy development remains focused on the Global North, with limited attention given to ESG practices in sub-Saharan Africa. This volume addresses this gap by examining ESG strategies, policies, and implementation in selected African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Zimbabwe.

Authored by African scholars, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of ESG frameworks, regulatory environments, corporate governance structures, and sector-specific applications across the region. It explores the intersection of ESG and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the role of financial markets, and the challenges and opportunities of ESG integration in key industries such as mining and energy. Additionally, it considers the impact of emerging technologies in advancing ESG practices.
