Had to fly to Paris so Jacqueline Follet and I could discuss the next era for James Holt's international brand... saw some interesting #urbandesign along the way - check out the new post! https://t.co/wgNqO4Ucc0

There also was an estimated net increase of 175,000 units of housing from 2017 - 2022 (NYCHVS). But the #housingmarket is VERY complex and household size, rental vs. owner-occ, interest rates, #vacancy rates, and real estate speculation, are all impacting #housingprices
If you live in #NYC , you probably think "what the hell is going on with #apartment prices". If you don't live in NYC, you have probably always thought that. In any case, it's crazy rn. Here are some thoughts on how we got to this insane #rental market: https://t.co/eQr5W7a3t2
The short answer is that the traditional logic of "lots of people moving to New York after the pandemic" isn't sufficient. There hasn't been a huge influx of new residents (NYC has continued the pre-pando trend of a net moves away from the city for the past 3 years)
The early summer "parade season" has got me thinking about the different ways we use our streets today and how we can plan better streets for everyone (not just cars) in the future:

The number of people who have told me they have discovered the bus in brooklyn since 2020 is amazing. Thank you to: uber/lyft being crazy expensive & wfh encouraging non-work travel. Now imagine the people who would ride if the off-peak frequency was <30 minutes !!
I was back in Boston for my college reunion this weekend, and it's got me thinkin about college towns and how lots of us live car-free for just 4 years of our life.

They didn't always work... (Narrowing the entrance and exit to the lane would be nice here) but still this was the only car in the bike lane on Mass Ave from Central Sq to Columbus Ave
I was really impressed by how effective these concrete parking blocks were in keeping cars out of the bike lanes in Boston!
Looking online they're only like $50 and make a huge difference compared to paint. Easy, cheap, and effective. It's a great combo!
I just can't stop thinking about waffles... I mean cars.
I'm shocked most people don't notice the way cars dominate our built environment. So I wrote about it!

For my fellow Transit Nerds:
Elizabeth Line trains will run 60 mph in central London, up to 90 mph in suburbs), frequency (initially every 5 minutes, eventually every 2.5 minutes), and signaling systems (ERTMS, CBTC and conventional)

"The High Cost of Free Parking" is like the Rosetta Stone for urban design in the US. All of a sudden I see parking requirements EVERYWHERE. It's like when Nic Cage puts those Ben Franklin glasses on in National Treasure
Been working on a podcast project for awhile with my friend, historian @padlerman where we talk about confusing political contradictions reflected in film & tv - the latest ep is out today! Part 2 of a 2-parter on the legacy of the hunger games movies…

This blog post is motivated by one of my first freelance projects where we attempted to improve conversion without success. It turns out we weren't thinking big picture enough. Join me on this journey to crack conversion and subscribe to the newsletter! (link in bio)
I've been thinking a lot about the ~tricky~ topic of Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) and how small e-commerce businesses can successfully improve conversion without breaking the bank. Here's the first post in a series on CRO: https://t.co/IJM7vELchF

I wrote about the Shopify Speed Score and how to understand site speed for beginners. While Shopify users can have strong site performance even if the score is low, check out this post to see why and how to fix it: https://t.co/JRgmKDMw7V

There are so many different email clients, desktop vs. mobile rules, dark mode, text size settings and other factors that drastically impact rendering for different receivers. Therefore, simple grid-based designs with web safe fonts are best practices for #EmailMarketing
I've worked on a lot of #EmailMarketing projects and wondered why #Klaviyo and #Mailchimp offer a lot less formatting/styling flexibility than website builders.
It turns out email rendering is the culprit: https://t.co/PE43w62sUY
When hiring, it's important to take stock of your own skills and focus on acquiring talent that you don't have. Got a design background? Hire a developer. Are you a squarespace whiz? Hire a designer to lay a good foundation.
When making an early hire (full time or contractor) for your tech team, it can be easy to assume that anyone who "does computer stuff" is good at design & development, but they're actually very different skill sets and both are very necessary for a successful site.
