Made from materials like foam, wood, plaster, and even miniature vegetation for added realism, some stood several meters tall, enabling the crew to capture sweeping camera shots and natural lighting that blended perfectly with actors’ performances and the budding CGI of the early 2000s. This hands-on method didn’t just make Middle-earth feel alive and tangible; it pushed the boundaries of practical effects in blockbuster filmmaking, leaving a legacy that still captivates and influences creators in the industry today.
