The universe is infinite. We're not even a speck of sand in the vast void of space - yet somehow, some people believe a small plot of land was given to them by some deity, and that land is somehow 'magical' and 'promised' or 'holy' to them. Jews, Muslims, Christians all lay claim to it - in the vast universe, with so many wonders, so many stars and planets - this little, tiny backwoods plot of desert is where it's all at. It's so worth it that humans kill their own to make sure that proper ownership of this plot is maintained.
If you believe in a deity that condones violence against your fellow man/woman/child all for a plot of 'holy land' - that deity isn't a good deity, and that land isn't holy.
