The team in Bergen Telemetry Network track different fish species in salt and fresh water! Lots of cool projects - check out https://t.co/ofrjzuEeWL to read more about our projects, the researcher team, and updates on our work!
Atlantic salmon at 78 degrees North - spectacular! We are tracking salmon, Arctic charr and pink salmon in the high North through the #NFR_NICE project.

October 30th is the International ghost shark day! The BTN team hope to add chimaera monstrosa to our research in the near future to gain insight into their behaviour & movement!
(This one was caught while repeating a scientific longline survey done in the 80s & 90s)
Check out what ETN members @lottepohl @DavidCBlanch & @lottesdahlmo are up to with the @EMFish2024 project! How do elasmobranchs respond to electromagnetic fields from offshore windfarms? They aim to find out 🦈
Saron and Lotte tagged 21 Atlantic cod last week in Svalbard! Now we just have to wait some months before we have more data on cod up in the high Arctic
Phd candidates @SaronBerhe1 & @lottesdahlmo are guest lecturers this week for bachelor students at Svalbard, with telemetry as subject. If weather allows for it, they will go out and hopefully capture and tag Atlantic cod the next few days 🐟
#NFR_NICE
And we have finally started tagging thornback rays! As a part of the #NFR_LOST project, we’re studying the effect of oxygen on their behaviour and movement 🦈 Just have to wait for some months before collecting data

Knut Wiik Vollset (@kwvollset), a professor at @NORCEresearch, leads the @BergenTelemetry Network, which tracks aquatic animals — such as lobsters, salmon, otters, etc. — in marine & freshwater habitats using advanced telemetry techniques.

Last summer, @morganpiczak visited us in Norway that included working on the #BOATS project, entailing tracking different species like cod & European lobster in relation to seabed restoration. Curious about telemetry & restoration efficacy? Read more here: https://t.co/3vXnyTJrxB
NEW paper from my research visit last summer to @NORCEresearch! Here we showcase how telemetry can be used to assess the efficacy of ecological restoration of fish habitat with case studies from Toronto and Bergen! Check it out here: https://t.co/jLeqljL5sV
Deploying acoustic release receivers in the fjord! We are ready to capture and tag the second study species in the #NFR_LOST project, the thornback ray!

My second PhD paper is out! 🎓📝Does interrupting smolts during migration harm them? Our latest research investigates the impact of capturing smolts using traps 🐟Check out the full study here: https://t.co/ul6YTRWeKN
This summer, our BTN members have done fieldwork for #NFR_RePRESS project: setting up radio antennas & tagging wild Atlantic salmon adults in western Norway! PhD candidate @ErlendMHanssen & MSc student Markus study the effects of otter predation on the salmon population🐟🦦
Read about the exciting BOATS project by @BergenTelemetry at @BergenLfi@NORCEresearch, which tracks marine species in the Bergen urban area before, during, and after a restoration project in our latest news article! 🐟🦞

Today’s the UN World Environment Day. Our LFI lab at @NORCEresearch works a lot with restoration of fish habitats, and with telemetry we can help conserve and protect valuable species and habitats for healthy environments - also in the future🌱🌊🪸
As a part of the #NFR_LOST project, we’re repeating a historic longline survey conducted in the Osterfjord fjord system to see how the bentic fish community has changed over time. One of the species caught was the spiny dogfish, the primary species being tracked in this project!
We had a stand at the Passion For Ocean festival today, with bycatch of some fjord shark species, the salmon lifecycle boardgame made by @IdenNilsen and shark memory game made by @lottesdahlmo! Lots of people showed interested🦈🐟 @NORCEresearch
