In the dry arid region of the Western Lowlands lies Barentu.ባረንቱ With its one main street there are many nomadic tribes in this area and Barentu is in the heart of Kunama territory. It is believed that the Kunama people were among Eritrea's first inhabitants.Being a market town Barentu attracts many people from the surrounding areas and there is a colorful mix of tribal cultures. The dusty streets ripple with every day life. With the heat here in the Western Plains the pace of life is refreshingly slow and marketing is a leisurely chat. The mushrooming trees along the streets are also giving added charm to the town.During the Ethiopian invasion that took place in 2000 most of the town was destroyed and plundered. In 2010 – Various damaged streets in Barentu town which were causing transport problem went under renovation through machinery-backed activities.
Best time to visit: Tuesdays or Saturdays when the Kunama people come out of their village to visit the market.♥️🇪🇷

In these tumultuous times, charting out synergetic and complementary architecture of collective regional security, and more broadly, modalities and mechanisms of wider cooperation has become more vital and urgent than ever before.

The overarching political considerations and operational calculus behind this conviction are the imperatives of ownership and agency; the need to avoid a polarized climate of global rivalry; and the rationale for enhancing local capacity building and mutual cooperation between the main stakeholders to secure and enhance enduring regional peace and stability.

In the Red Sea, this broad framework translates and is better summed up in the following 12 points that Eritrea submitted to the Council of Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Littoral States few years ago.

Eritrea maintains that these parameters can indeed serve as substantive inputs that can be enriched through continuous and rigorous consultation against the backdrop of fluid and changing realities.

1. Comprehensive and unbiased assessment of the current realities of the Red Sea and associated matters, in all their dimensions and perspectives in a realistic manner;
2. Full clarity on the desired objectives and goals;
3. Detailed mapping of the threats to the peace and security of the Red Sea; and, categorization and specification of these parameters;
4. Formulation of a viable strategy that will ensure achievement of constructive objectives and goals;
5. Formulation of strategies to contain and eliminate the threats in tandem with the positive policies of cooperation;
6. Mapping out detailed schemes and plans that will ensure holistic implementation of the twin strategies;
7. Stipulation of the implementation mechanisms, associated structures and mobilization of the requisite resources;
8. Ensuring that all the organizational configurations and frameworks that are developed are anchored on respect of sovereignty and international law;
9. Ensuring that all littoral States build and possess their own effective defense capabilities and naval forces (without delegation to others);
10. Supplementing, through collective efforts and synergy, those specific tasks that cannot be met through individual domestic capabilities and resources;
11. All relevant States will create appropriate modalities of cooperation with “external forces” for tasks or missions that are beyond their collective capability on the basis of a consensual framework;
12. Creation of competent committees to address all these issues in a comprehensive and professional manner.

Weldeab Weldemariam: The Man They Could Not Silence

Some people fight with weapons. Weldeab Weldemariam fought with words, conviction, and an unbreakable love for Eritrea.

Long before the armed struggle began, he dedicated his life to awakening Eritrean national consciousness. He believed Eritrea deserved to exist as a free and independent nation at a time when many dismissed that dream as impossible.

Because of his unwavering stance, he became a target. Between 1947 and 1953, he survived multiple assassination attempts commonly described as eight in total, including one in 1953 that left him hospitalized for months. Despite the constant danger, he refused to abandon his cause.

Eventually, the threats forced him into exile in Egypt for his safety. But exile did not silence him. Distance did not weaken his resolve. From abroad, he continued to write, organize, inspire, and advocate for Eritrea's right to self-determination. He never accepted the idea that Eritrea would disappear. He carried the certainty that one day the Eritrean flag would fly over a sovereign nation.

History proved him right.

After decades of sacrifice, Weldeab lived to witness the birth of the independent Eritrea he had dreamed of and fought for throughout his life. His legacy reminds us that true revolution begins with courage, conviction, and an unshakable belief in one's homeland.

Assab is where #Eritrea’s story began 134 years ago. It is Eritrea’s first-born province. There is no Eritrea without Assab, and no #Assab without #Eritrea.
Ethiopia cannot demand peace on the Nile while hinting at force on the Red Sea. Real leadership requires consistency, even when it’s politically inconvenient.
But when it comes to the Red Sea, the message has been far less consistent. In 2023, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described Ethiopia’s lack of sea access as “existential,” and some of his remarks raised fears of a potential attempt to seize Assab. That’s a dangerous precedent. Unlike the Nile, which is a transboundary river governed by international frameworks, Assab is sovereign Eritrean territory.
