Hearts is the only suit France kept from the old German deck. When the French redesigned cards in the 1400s, leaves became spades, acorns became clubs, and bells became diamonds. Hearts stayed hearts.

Every deck of cards hides 600 years of history. So I turned one into a set of dark, jeweled iPhone wallpapers, one story per card.

First, the suits. ♠♥♣♦ showed up in France around 1480. Simple shapes could be stenciled instead of hand painted, so cards finally got cheap enough for everyone.
