When I used to write for The Observer/Guardian I would never have used a problem that made me so annoyed that I couldn’t think straight. This is about a therapist who I think is behaving unethically but what d’you think. Free to read👇
Mental health services are in crisis.
873,117 under 24-year-olds were in contact with mental health services at the end of May in England - a 10% increase from the previous year.
And the highest recorded number since records began in 2016.
377,017 under 18s are still waiting for their first contact with services. They have waited an average of 276 days to be seen, up from 200 days since last year.
This needs to be a wake up call for our Government.
Young people should not have to wait 250+ days to get the support they need.
The Government says cutting waiting times is a priority. We need to see more evidence that applies to mental health services for young people.
They should urgently roll out Young Futures Hubs in every local area – including a full mental health offer, where young people can get support on the day, without needing a GP referral or appointment.
And they need to start addressing the drivers of poor mental health - like poverty and the education system.
We need a Government that has the ambition it promised a year ago, one that knows it needs to work across Government and shows young people that it cares about their future and their mental health.
Exams can be tough, but supporting young people through them doesn’t have to be.

When we think about anxiety in children, we often picture lots of worrying. But anxiety can show up in so many different ways.

This needs to urgently change. Three in four teachers say poor student mental health is getting in the way of learning in the classroom, our latest research shows.
Teachers told us they have no choice but to step in – since students are not getting the support they need on the NHS or elsewhere. Schools are already understaffed and under-resourced. And young people deserve to get the support they need, when they need it, no matter what.
Mental health problems among school-aged children “is at epic proportions and should be a national scandal. There’s just not enough [NHS] provision. Our children are suffering under a system unfit for purpose,” says James Bowen from the National Association of Head Teachers.
We urgently demand that the Government deliver on its commitment to provide specialist mental health support in all schools. And we need an education system that puts wellbeing on the same level as academic achievement. #WorldMentalHealthDay #HelloYellow

📝 We’re sharing some tips from school staff and Place2Be clinicians to help you manage stress and take care of your mental health.
When you feel angry, try and listen to what your anger is telling you: have your boundaries been crossed? Do you feel unheard? Powerless? Hurt? Anger isn’t a ‘bad’ emotion - it is healthy to feel angry sometimes.
