The ASG @IndrikaRatwatte, has arrived in #Syria for a five-day visit, marking his first visit to the country.
During his mission, he will meet with government officials and engage with partners & people on the ground to hear directly about their experiences and perspectives.
Heading into the New Year, with such a tough year behind for so many people around the world, I hold on to the hope that the voice of reason, compassion & our shared humanity will break through. We will do everything in our power to make this happen.
Light and peace for 2026!
Medical assistance remains one of the most urgent needs among recent Afghan returnees. @UNHCRAfg was today pleased to facilitate a visit of Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 and a team of their medical experts to meet with returnees and assess areas for possible health support.
Indrika Ratwatte, deputy special representative (development) for Afghanistan in the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), during her visit to Bamyan, met with Mawlawi Abdullah Sarhadi, the governor of the province, and discussed issues related to humanitarian aid, development cooperation, healthcare services, and the situation of migrants and vulnerable people.
According to the statement from the Bamyan Governor’s Office, Ratwatte stressed the need to facilitate effective operations for national and international organizations.
The statement also noted that the Bamyan governor stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in the province and called for the reopening of the infectious disease hospital, equipping drug rehabilitation centers, and addressing the livelihoods of families affected by natural disasters.

At today’s Geneva event on return & reintegration, UNHCR’s Deputy Representative in Afghanistan highlighted the realities on the ground & amplified the voices of women. The message was clear: more funding, more support, more compassion — hope must not collapse at the border.
Weeks after the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, families are still trying to recover. UNHCR is on the ground delivering life-saving support but the needs remain huge. Watch 📹

Alarming gap: Afghan returnees surge as funding falls dangerously short. Without urgent investment, hard-won progress will collapse—risking regional instability. We call for immediate action. #UNinAfghanistan

My thoughts are with the Burmese, who have already suffered enough since the military coup, and now because of the earthquake. I pray for the victims and their families. My thoughts are with the victims in Thailand. My heart beats for the people in both countries!
Inspired by the innovation and resilience I witnessed while visiting companies and factories in Kandahar and Helmand. With UN support, entrepreneurs and communities are driving progress and creating livelihoods for #Afghan people.
