July 8, 1990.
Maradona stood in Rome while 73,000 people booed his national anthem.
He mouthed "Hijos de puta!" directly into the camera.
The referee saw it and did nothing.
This is how the 1990 World Cup final began.
Five days earlier, in Naples, Maradona had told the Neapolitans that Italy was not their country. Half the crowd in the San Paolo had cheered for Argentina. Italy had never forgiven him.
Now, in Rome, the crowd was going to make that clear.
The Argentine national anthem rang out at the Stadio Olimpico. The Roman crowd booed it from beginning to end. 73,000 people expressing what Italy had felt since Naples. Maradona stood in the Argentine line and mouthed words directly to camera.
"Hijos de puta!" Sons of whores.
Referee Edgardo Codesal, standing close by, saw it and said nothing. He later admitted he could have sent Maradona off before the game had even begun. He chose not to. He would have other opportunities to shape the evening.
Argentina had arrived at this final as a wounded, diminished version of the side that had won in Mexico four years earlier. Four players were suspended before kickoff. Caniggia was not there, serving his ban after the Naples semi-final. The squad that had dragged itself through six games on penalties, on Goycochea's reflexes, on Maradona's sheer will, had almost nothing left.
Guido Buchwald had one job. He did it for 90 minutes. Wherever Maradona moved, Buchwald moved with him. "Minute by minute," Buchwald said later, "I could tell from his body language that he was becoming increasingly resigned, as if to say: what, you again?"
The German became so associated with Maradona that his compatriots nicknamed him "Diego" in his honour. He barely touched the ball himself all evening. He didn't need to.
Argentina's strategy was simple and desperate. Defend. Reach penalties. Rely on Goycochea.
Maradona could barely influence the match, his knee inflamed, his ankle swollen from years of brutal challenges. Argentina managed one shot on target in 90 minutes.
In the 65th minute Pedro Monzón became the first player ever sent off in a World Cup final, a challenge on Klinsmann that left a gash on his shin.
Then in the 85th minute, Rudi Völler went down in the penalty area under Roberto Sensini's challenge. Codesal pointed to the spot. Maradona approached the referee and told him directly that he was a thief and on the FIFA payroll. Codesal gave him a yellow card and stood firm.
Codesal himself is on record defending the decision: "The referees don't have to look for intent, they have to look for contact." Earlier in the same game he had refused to give Argentina a penalty for what appeared to be a similar challenge.
Matthäus, the regular taker, who had once borrowed a pair of boots from Maradona years earlier and became fascinated by the way Diego tied them, had changed his boots during the match and didn't trust his footing.
Andreas Brehme stepped up and buried it low to Goycochea's right. Dezotti was sent off in the chaos that followed. Argentina finished with nine men.
The final whistle blew. Maradona cried in the centre circle for a long time. He had promised his daughter Dalma he would bring the World Cup home. She was four years old when her father made her that promise in Rome and couldn't keep it.
The referee Codesal gave his verdict on Maradona years later. "As a player he was the best. But as a person he was an unpleasant person and one of the worst I've gotten to know in my life."
Maradona's verdict on the final was briefer. "They stole it from us."
He would play in one more World Cup, four years later, scoring one more spectacular goal before being expelled for doping ten days later.
The night God cried. 🇦🇷
The final should really be here. Commercial, broadcasting and political reasons doubtless why it isn’t but Azteca beats any of the other stadia for atmosphere and heritage.
