Ellen Axson Wilson, President Woodrow Wilson’s first wife, had ties to Rome and corresponded with Martha Berry. After Ellen passed in 1914, she was buried at Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Martha shared photos of Berry girls honoring her grave, for which Wilson expressed gratitude.
Did you know Martha Berry never held the title of president? As founder and director of the Berry Schools, she led with vision and grit, but the title came later. The only woman to serve as president was Dr. Gloria Shatto.
Did you know Dr. Sandeep Mazumder is Berry’s ninth official president, though 11 individuals have served in the role? In the early-to-mid 1950s, Dr. Williams McChesney Martin Jr. and Dr. Samuel Henry Cook both served as acting president.
Did you know President Theodore Roosevelt encouraged Martha Berry to open a school for girls? In a 1909, letter, he praised her school for boys for girls opened later that fall, and Roosevelt visited the Berry Schools on Oct. 8, 1910.
Did you know Berry’s longest-serving presidents helped shape generations of learning on the Hill? Dr. John Bertrand (1956-79), Dr. Stephen Briggs (2006-25), Dr. Gloria Shatto (1980-98) and Dr. G. Leland Green (1926-44) guided Berry through decades of growth and change.
